Cycles on site

So many of them have absolutely no road sense? Their parents just "set them loose"? Is this not irresponsible?
On another thread there is related how a child. not looking where he/she was going, and going against the one way system, has damaged a car that had stopped on the site road.
Parent has apparently offered to pay, but of course there are no guarantees.
Why should a member have to bear the cost of such a repair, or even part of it, which is what some are suggesting?

One in the eye for Harold there . . .

i watched my grandchildren going round the site we was on last week, on there bike and scooters making friends and having fun. just like i did as a child i was able to play in the streets and woods near my home and was safe . the children today are not so
lucky as we were. with traffic on our roads today and undesirables about. i felt that they could play safely on site just like i did years ago. so i say let them have fun and the people who dont like i would say dont go on holiday in august just like i did
before we had grandchildren. i will be away next month when they are all back in school. and the sites are quite once more . what can we moan about then?0 -
I think the main point is, Magnet, that sites aren't particularly safe places for children to play.

The five year olds will be back at school soon. For the under the under fives it's far safer to cycle around the campsite roads than out on the highway. And if some older Club members don't like them doing that then they can keep posting their complaints here to their hearts' content. And no doubt they will.

All of this moaning by people with kids seems to be just so that they don't have to do anything with their kids. All they seem to want to do is to send them on their way to play on the site roads......just so long as they are out of their way.
Ever thought about actually spending some time with them?

How many of you posting here have actually ever had children? Even when I was supervising our own wobbling junior bike riders they would still pedal away 20 yds before turning round and coming back to me - pardon me I've just realised that turning round
and cycling back to the parent is against the rules!Young children do need lots of wobbling time on very quiet areas ( not public roads) to acquire a new skill, site roads to me are an ideal place ( under supervision but not hand holding)

Just been on a (private) site in DumGal. A young German family all had bikes. During the day the kids (probably under 12 + baby) amused themselves with mum and dad in their paddling pool, playing Diablo & so on. In the afternoon they all went out on their
bikes together with baby being towed in a trailer by dad. They even cycled out to the local restaurant for dinner. It was a joy to see.0 -
DD, site roads may be open to the public but they are not public highways - if they were the CC would not be able to set speed limits etc.
Without getting into an argument, my point was that they should be safe for jaywalkers/children/dogs etc

Yes we did have young children many years ago, however I don't really think that is a prerequisite for expressing an opinion. I think you are missing the point, you were supervising your children and would have stopped them if for instance a car came. What folk are concerned about are unsupervised, often very young children traveling at significant speeds. Even when it was going dark, as I posted earlier.

To get things in perspective, and not to upset anyone, a young boy had a collision with a car and caravan while playing on his bike on a cc site and died later in hospital. So please supervise Your children and cars keep your speed down. I am not saying
stop your children enjoying themselves but be aware that things happen may I add the car and caravan was not speeding at the time.0 -
My grandchildren spent their holiday yesterday paint balling and practising archery. If the Club were to bring activities like that on to Club sites the bike problem might go away.
Both activities are good fun and both will have been carried out in a safe environment and under very controlled conditions (I hope). Underlying that they, hopefully, understood that safety was paramount and to act responsibly.
If similar conditions were available onsite I would also get involved with the archery, but I doubt it will ever become available.
Who's going to pay for all the equipment in the first instance? Surely the majority of members don't want to cough up for a set of facilities that they are never going to use. To recoup the cost the club would have to charge those taking part a very high
price, which would then restrict those likely to use the facility. Why have a pop at me I'm not advocating it should happen just agreeing that archery is good fun and that if it was available I would have
a go...There is an archery club on Nene Park, next to Ferry Meadows, but needs a large area to work, as would most activities

Another interesting and timely thread:
"Damage to my car" under UK Sites and Touring.
Well I just took a look at that thread, DD, and there's no suggestion, is there, that the 8 year old involved was either cycling too fast or in a wrong direction. It appears to have been an accident. (Don' t get me wrong, I'm not trying
to underplay how annoying it must have been to the OP, but accidents happen on CC sites as in life generally). What I'm struggling with is folk calling for action on account of an 8 year old causing accidental damage and yet the same folk being so relaxed about adults deliberately flouting the 5 mph speed limit on
site. Smacks of double standards, I'm sorry to say.0 -

Good post.
My daughter learned to ride at New England Bay.
However, she was never at first allowed to ride without me either walking or riding with her. Children are far too precious to risk.
Once children get a bit bigger and start wanting to be off with friends is when they can cause problems with bikes on site roads. Unless of course the parents are right in their heads and supervise them closely recognising they are precious and break easily.

The child does appear to have been going against the one way system, according to this statement by the driver....
" We were driving the correct way down the one way system when the boy cycled towards us so we stopped (not moving), the after 5 ish seconds the boy who was looking over his shoulder and not looking where he was going cycled into my car. "

Correct, K, I hadn't seen that bit of the OP's second post.
It's still the idea that this accident caused by an 8 year old causes so much consternation in contrast to folk's relaxed attitude about adults ignoring the speed limit that puzzles me though.

JWJ just made a good point about using the horn to alert Child

DD, as far as we know the child wasn't being supervised although the OP doesn't say that the child's father wasn't present (the child was looking over his shoulder at something, possibly his father, at the time). But clearly the child didn't deliberately
damage the car, it was accidental. Why you should think I'm trying to "bait" you by expressing a different point of view is beyond me by the way!
