Here we go again, sitting on a popular CC site which has shown full for all this week for some 2 weeks or more. Low and behold a poor weather forcast for the weekend has suddenly provided some 7 vacant pitches.

That means members who would have used the pitches have been disadvantaged by selfish members cancelling late. Given the club rules there are no meaningful penalties so hey ho what is to stop them abusing the system and their fellow members.

Who said there is no arguement for imposing deposits

Not sure deposits help. From previous pists the club found deposits made matters worse as people just accepted the loss and did not turn up. The current system with the e mails works better as more people now cancel allowing more pitches to be relet.

Yes, gale force winds, expecting to cause disruption, are forecast for the weekend.

I expect some people are having 2nd thoughts about towing in such conditions.

    Take care, everyone.

I think this is an usual weekend with the high winds affecting people's decision to tow in such condtions. Who is to to say that someone who decides to not tow in high winds is wrong, is it worth risking it for the sake of a booking? Also if this is the
case having deposits would make little difference.

So it could be more to do with the 85% ratio than deposits.

    Agree with the op.

Of course deposits would make a difference. They might not stop people cancelling (debatable) but they would certainly stop people booking if they weren't (at least initially) intent on taking up the booking.

If nothing else, the Club would gain by retaining the lost deposits. At present they get nothing from those empty pitches.

You might want to lend the boy a pair of wellies, Helen. I well remember running Gloucester league cross country races through Cirencester park many years ago. If the course goes down into the bottom of those woods it'll become truly muddy challenge!! Wink

We had to cancel Cheltenham last Saturday at the last minute because I was too ill to travel.  Not only that but our week in Dorset from the following day with family also went down the swannee!  We even set off and made it to Hilton Park services before
    having to turn back.

We don't know why people cancel but that doesn't stop some people from speculating.

How does the OP know they are cancelations? If I was on site for the week, as we usually stop a week, I would prefer to leave a day early, and just accept the loss, rather than travel in Saturday's strong winds.

Nice to hear from Wayne and Judie Seagull again, their cheery posts always brighten up a dull day.

If we didnt feel it was safe to tow, or we were too ill to go away we would cancel. Deposits wouldnt make any difference to that.  They might make a difference to those who book many holidays across the year with the specific intent of cancelling a proportion - if these people exist.

Indeed I did leave site 2 days early a few years ago to return home. By then there was a 40ph speed limit to high vehicles on a section of the M62

Knowing W&J's dislike for CC sites I am a little surprised they're staying on one bang in the middle of peak season. It would be good to know which "popular CC site" they're referring to wouldn't it? Wink

It is one of caravaning's great riddles that those who endlessly complain about the club and club sites carry on on going to them!

    I was reading a great book by Bill Bryson on Holiday and he gave a checklist of questions to ask yourself to see if (his words not mine) you are becoming 'dangerously stupid yourself', these included;

do you think if you pat your pockets enough times it will make a missing object appear?

If you are waiting for a lift that's slow to come, do you push the button again and again in the belief that that will speed things up?

    He could have added;

If you dislike or find club sites expensive, do you keep on going to them in the belief that things will improve or they will get cheaper?

BTW, I do pat my pockets and press lift buttons like that

Just goes to prove the point that it's always worth a call to the site to check if there are any cancellations for your desired dates, always pros and cons both ways I guess.

Who said there is no arguement for imposing deposits

There are arguments for all sorts of things but it doesn't mean we have to accept them. I suspect the majority of members are happy with the current arrangements and I imagine the club know this. There are some that think a booking deposit will be the panacea
for all ills but having them will introduce a whole raft of new difficulties not least extra costs and inconvenience to members.

I just wish that someone would offer a coherent argument supporting the (often repeated, but never demonstrated) view that taking deposits (with its improved cash-flow and the recovery of something-rather-than-nothing for cancellations) would somehow "cost" the CC and its members money......because I'm blowed if I can see it.

I think many members like the fact that they dont pay a deposit so can spread the cost of their holidays rather than booking say 5 holidays for the year on the December booking day and having to pay all the deposits in one go.

If the CC genuinely believed that not taking deposits was a major problem then surely they would be keen to address it, especially now in the era of easy online payments.

Premier Inn and other places - eg booking.com - offer similar flexibility to cancel right up to the day before so the CC is not alone by any means.

I am sure nobody would say you had to tow your caravan if the weather was dangerous to do so just to avoid cancellation. In that situation most people would cancel whether or not they had paid a deposit. There is even some debate that if you choose to tow
when the advice has been not to, and then have an accident caused by the high winds, whether your insurance company could legitimately refuse to pay out.

It has been many years since the club stopped taking deposits and has stated that the number of no shows actually went down when it did stop deposits. The system works well at present, if there was a problem the club would have reintroduced deposits by now

It would greatly facilitate matters if the cancellation period was 5 days rather the current paltry 3.
