Directions to club sites
we have just visited Hurn lane and Cheltenham sites and followed directions as given in the handbook. However on our way out from both these sites we found much easier routes for our motorhome when we looked at our map book. From Hurn lane we took the
shorter lane out towards Berrow then onto B3140 as recommended this seemed much easier than the Red road route. From the cheltenham site we took the A435 towards Bishops Cleave and then to the M5, if travelling down the M5 in either direction this seemed
to be much easier. What do others do, follow directions from the handbook or find your own, sat nav is used with caution.

The routes are designed not only for the benefit of us, Chaben, but also to help alleviate problems for local traffic. In addition, the recommended routes are suitable for all units.
The road you took out of the Hurn Lane site has a big bend which would have been no problem for you but might have been for someone towing a 26ft caravan - especially if he met another coming the other way.
I always follow the given directions for first arrival at a site and apply common sense thereafter. My MH will go where a Tesco home delivery van will but, again, things are different if you're towing a large caravan. That said, I try to be considerate of local people and other road users by not driving in places where I may cause problems or upset. After all, we don't want sites closing due to complaints about traffic.

we use the directions as stated as I've always found them to be correct, I suppose they are given for MHs and those towing a caravan which require more ease of access than MHs (depending upon size of MH of course).
Would the easier routes your found have been as easier with a caravan?

I found once using the clubs directions they were poor and not that accurate. Following them to the letter took us miles away from the site. Now I do it the old fashioned way, read a map and make notes. Once bitten twice shy.

No one is saying they are perfect, GF, but they are written with the bigger picture in mind. Report any anomalies to the Sites Dept for correction.

The routes are normally to cover all type of outfits on the most suitable,there are several sites we have used in the past with both c/vans and m/vans, and can see why, a classic is the route to Ashridge Farm it is easy, if in a m/van (smallish) coming from north on A1 to follow a shorter route through the village of Ashwell,but if you really want to upset the very vocal locals try it with a large (most) c/vans

For a first visit we always follow the club directions. As TW says there may be other reasons for these routes, other than just road width. Edinburgh is a good example, after several visits we now have several routes in / out dept on direction of onward
travel and time of day.0
