Technically there are two parts to people smoking and both of them need to be adressed. As in the post above, there are people who enjoy the process of doing it - whether the pallaver, the break from work, the chance to chat, sucking with the lips, etc.
The other part is that nicotine alone is more addictive than heroin, and there are another good half dozen addictive chemicals in the smoke.
Failure to stop can usually be traced to not dealing satisfactorily with both halves. Also, what the smoker tastes is not what the non-smokers around him/her taste. The smokers taste is radically changed and reduced for all flavours, and sometimes replacing
tobacco with a sweet taste is unpleasant for them.0 -
There is a sure fire way to stop smoking that works for everyone. Death.
But how many do they take with them having inflicted others with their secondhand smoke. I say thais as someone who has never smoked but ended up with a smoking related disease.

Write your comments here...Are you serious this is a question which relates to the potential damage to childrens health and I feel your reply is rediculous. I dont believe that the health of their children will be affected by any of your examples. I am a none smoker and find the disusting habbit offensive, especially when it affects me or my family. I find that most smokers dont give a damn if there passaive smoke drifts towards other people. If it would have been drifting into my caravan i would have made them very aware. I cant see there being a ban on smoking but hopefully the smokers will be a little more thoughtful.

No meat BBQs I say.

I know most none smokers struggle with the following statement BUT believe it or not many of us smoke because we enjoy it. I smoke cigars and have no desire to stop. I have stopped in the past for seven years or so, I even had a similar period of abstinence
from alcohol. Point is do not think that every smoker smokes because he cant stop nut wihes he could.I too enjoyed smoking. I would take it up again tomorrow if it was cheap and I knew that it wouldn't kill me.
But it isn't and it will.
Also, it kills other people and they find it disgusting.
So ban it from anywhere that anyone else will have to suffer it.

As an asthmatic - the more places smoke is banned the better for my health - Although I have noticed that the ban has made me even more sensitive to smoke than before. I urge smokers to understand that their (filthy) habit really DOES have an impact on
people who don't smoke.0 -
just have a word!! they would more than likely be mortified.
no point just sitting there steaming. if you dont ask you dont get

I didn't say it was easy, but it can be done if there is a will to do so.
I take it you have first hand experience
Yes......I stopped when they reached 50p a packet.....far too expensive for me at the time.
Which is another good reason to tax them so they cost £20/packet.

Called in at a coffee shop today. Wanted to sit outside in the beautiful sunshine. Too many smokers. Couldn't sit inside because of the air conditioning. Felt like Ice Station Zebra. Apologised to counter staff for wasting their time but explaineed that
non smokers who didn't like smoke couldn't sit outside so sooner a ban put on smoking in these establishments inside AND out then the better.0 -
The thing that helped me to stop smoking was......I took a look around at friends, colleagues, relatives etc who didn't smoke, and it struck me that they were actually no worse off in any way for not smoking. In fact, financially they were better off.
So I realised that, really, there was no advantage to smoking and there were lots of advantages to not smoking.
People who smoke are just slaves to a habit. And the sad thing is that it will almost certainly shorten your life for absolutely no advantage.....and it makes you very unpopular with the majority of people.
There really is no up-side to smoking.

There really is no up-side to smoking
Apart from all those fag breaks non smokers dont get .........
I am a non smoker but I always go out and stand with my work colleague when she goes out just because otherwise you never get out of the building for 10 hours solid!

The D word disliker wanted to sit outside but didn't want to be near Molly the Mutt ...... bu66er off & sit inside
where we're not allowed was what I wanted to sayHaving one's cake & eating it springs to mind.

I found that it was the smokers (at all levels of responsibility) in my business who knew what was going on and discussed and resolved issues over an informal drag in the loading bay. They didn't need to attend management meetings!

Does your smoking colleague get done what is required of her/him?
But surely they would get more done if they didn't keep 'disappearing' throughout the day.
You can't do any more than all of the day's work

I agree with the inclusiveness of smokers. I had smokers(most of em) in my felling team(Tree felling) we would chew the fat, relax, smoke ciggys, but discuss the job at hand. If I insisted they didn't smoke I'd not have gotten half the input & discussion
I got. I may not be a smoker but I was a listener & a respectful boss who got the most out of employees/smokers.0 -
