...anyone have any first hand experience of politely having a word with a smoker on site to make them aware that the smoke was bothering you....?

did it acheive the required result...?

whilst most members are fairly easy going, i suspect i can guess at the response, probably not along the lines of...."you're right, ill give it up for Lent..." or "we'll move to a pitch downwind of you.....".Sad

as many smokers require several fixes per hour any cessation wont be for long....but good luck...

not really a lot you can do, close the smoker facing windows and open the others.....?

....move pitch yourself but what a pain and there may be smokers everywhere....

Write your comments here...A somebody who has 1 cigarette after each meal and one with a scotch around 5pm before I start preparing the evening meal I would not wish to forego my curbed vice.

That's absolutely understandable EasyT, however, I guess it is where you choose to do it and the consideration given that is the point some are making!

The smell of cigarettes being smoked carries a very long way, even in the open air if the wind is towards you. And the smell lingers on smokers indefinitely, no matter how hygienic they are.

It would be difficult to ask someone to stop smoking if they are pitched next to you. Best you can hope for is to ask very politely if they could move to prevent it getting into windows, but be prepared for rejection. It is an addiction, very emotive subject,
    easy to be defensive.

One of the upsides of a small MH is if the neighbours don't suit, for whatever reason, then moving pitch is easy. We find Club Sites when busy a no go on a number of reasons, this is one of them, but we are happy to look elsewhere.

Only advice I can give to Op is never, ever take your holidays in Germany. We're just back from a trip and we were once again surprised (happens every time we go) at the huge numbers of Germans that smoke, of all ages. Admittedly it was in the eastern part
but have seen the same in the west. We only came across one couple who have changed to the e-vap and to be honest with you I "preferred" the proper cigarette smoke to smell of these e-cigarettes. Smoking there didn't seem to be voluntary but compulsory. Something
you just have to put up with I'm afraid.

That really surprises me WN. I know folk who use Ecigs their home has gone from smelling like an ashtray to smelling of fruit(they both use the 'cherry & blueberry' flavoured ejuices. I like it far better than true cigarettes.

Should a vegetarian complain when the smell / smoke from the next  pitchs burgers / bacon  wafts over to their pitch?

I used to work with a lovely lady but despite much perfume she absolutely stank of stale smoke. Unfortunately, or fortune for us, all the smokers had to pickle themselves together under the work's smoke shelter situated round the back of the building (bit like the school bike shed). The smell of stale smoke in this area was always very strong even when there were no smokers in residence.  Eventually that facility disappeared when smoking was 'banned' altogether on our work premises. Many of the smokers either packed up smoking at work or stopped altogether but that smell around where once the shelter had been remained for some considerable time! In fact it may linger to this day for all I know!

I really hadn't intended to upset anyone. I think perhaps we were unfortunate with our neighbours. I can see how the logistics of separate areas would be prohibitive. It was just a thought.

Absolutely right, nothing wrong with discussion as long as it helps or makes us think about how our actions can impact on others.

Depends on why they are vegetarian - if they are bunny huggers they probably would, but some are vegetarian for medical reasons and would be driven wild by the smell.

Write your comments here...I don't like either, Rocky, but the artificial sweetness of the e-vaps makes me a little nauseous. I have no idea whether or not the chemicals in the e-vaps are doing me harm, although I suspect they are not actually improving
my health, and I know that the smoke from the ciggies are, but I just find them unpleasant as opposed to sickening.

They can't be that bad WN, the NHS are trialling them as a 'smoking cessation' aid. If nothing else they'll be better than Real ciggysHappy

I agree that they must be better than ciggies, Rocky. I watched my father die of lung cancer, all too young, and not a pretty death. I hate cigarettes but I merely mention theat the smell of e-cigarettes is more obnoxious to me than ordinary cigarettes,
    which I also detest.

I agree that anything which helps addicts give up this drug is for the good. I was merely offerring an opinion on which I "prefer" to inhale.

I think anything is better than real ciggys WN. With you on the loss too, best mate lost to lung cancer-never had a fag out of His mouth. It's probably why I think the Ecigs are a good thing, they're proving to get lots of folk off the bad ones.

We have been affected by smokers on an adjoining pitch. Not a lot can be done I think. However please could we try and educate smokers not to leave their cigarette ends over the pitch. At one site in Spain I picked up over 100 before we pitched (plastic
gloves and plastic bag). Why do smokers think it is acceptable to throw their cigarette ends everywhere.  We have just toured around Ireland visiting endless beautiful places, but at every single stop,no matter how remote, we found cigarette ends. Yuk

We are non smokers , and agree with most post what happened to ashtrays !! Surely they could use them when sat outside, this terrible dirty habit of flicking them anywhere is most annoying , once at rowntree we asked them to use an ashtray as we git fed up with the smell and flicking them anywhere and everywhere, do they honestly think they are not taking a chance on damaging other campers awnings ect

We put them in two groups group 1 clean smokers who consider others and there property 2 dirty and selfish  Smokers another thing that gets our goat smokers who flick there dog ends out of the car window when driving and empty there ashtrays on pavement when parked Dirty Sods Yell

I'm not sure it has anything to do with being a smoker, it is just how some folk behave. There is a rat run close to where we live and there are always plastic drink bottles, paper cups and wrappers on the grass verge and in the hedges. As fast as the litter
is cleared away, they deposit more. I can only put it down to how they were brought up, as these attitudes tend to be passed on to ones kids. Some countries manage to get more or less everyone on board, just look at Switzerland, we unfortunately fail miserably.

30 years ago we took a widowed lady and her son with us and our daughter to Blackpool illuminations. We had some fish and chips. My daughter put her wrappings in a nearby bin. The lady and son seemed to think it acceptable to bung them under a bench. Never
    took them again

I really think that the vast majority of smokers do not consider that throwing cigarette ends away is littering.

Another beating of smokers, my wife and I both smoke in our awning have a spinning ashtray and never flick our but ends on site. Couple of thoughts statistics show that only 20% of revenue collected from cigarette sales is spent on the extra cost of treating
smoke related diseases and obesity costs far more to the NHS than smoking. As previously stated a number of things can upset people on site Children, Dogs, noise etc but this is a hobby for everyone and as such we should all just learn to get a longHappy

I stopped smoking over 30 years ago but do accept that some people struggle to give up or simply want to carry on smoking despite the health warnings.

On the subject of fag ends maybe we should empower the wardens to impose a fixed penalty fine for dropping litter, the same as some towns are now enforcing.

    See below.

    Remember

    • There will be no warnings. If you drop litter (including cigarette butts or chewing gum) you will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80.
    • That you can use bins without ashtrays, extinguish the cigarette first, then place it in the bin.
    • Not having a bin to hand is not an excuse for littering.
    • Placing a cigarette end down a drain is still an offence which will result in a fine.
    • The offence is complete once the item is deposited and the person walks away.

Failing to give your name and address is an offence under the Environment Protection Act 1990 Section 88 (8B).Happy

I totally agree that people are entitled to smoke outside their caravans etc but I do not see why we should tolerate litter, after all that is illegal!
