Whitby beaches

 we are off to Whitby club site in June for one week, we went last year but did not get to see everything.

which are the best beaches (dog friendly preferably) within a short drive other than Whitby itself and robin hoods bay. ??

    Hmm. We don't find it that good to be honest, restrictions during Summer. But they can go on some parts, you would be best consulting Beaches and dogs website for area. I think even Sandsend to the North has some restrictions in place, and you need to get
    tides right or there is no beach! 

    Good dog walk is to park on way down to RHB, and walk along old railway line towards Boggle Hole. You can drop down and walk back along beach if tide is out. Bit of road walking towards Boggle Hole, check re dogs at RHB, as we last did it a few years ago,
    and could have been later in year. Nice area though, but make sure you use good tick treatment on dog, can be awful for ticks on NY moors!

    many thanks will try and find the railway line I didn't see it last year. We went same week in June and dogs were ok on rhb and the north beach in whitby. Yes your right about tics she got one last year just on the site.

    athel, its very nice with good dog walks from site, about fifteen min drive to Whitby. Robin hoods bay worth a visit its like a mini Clovelly or  even a English Ville fraunch

    Just checked, you can still walk dogs on beach at RHB. If your visit is in Summer it will be very busy the closer you get to RHB, but might be ok and less busy at Boggle Hole. I think we took our Airedale pups on beach at Runswick Bay as well, but that was a long time ago. Bay like beaches get packed as the cliffs restrict access into funnelled areas, so they are always busy.

    runswick bay !! Will have a look at that too. It wasn't that busy at all last June.

    Sandsend is lovely - beautiful beach and a really great little place.  I am not sure about restrictions on dogs on the beach though. You would need to check.

    thanks, I think we drove through sandsend but didn't stop. Our bitch was in season so beach walks were out of the question which was a real shame hence our return visit this year.

    another question,     what is the A64 from York and the A169 from Pickering like for towing ?

    We use both on a regular basis. A64 is dual carriageway all round York, then goes into single as it gets to East of York, but good road, with dualled sections all way up to Malton. A bit hilly in places, some swooping bends, but actually great to drive.
    You get off A64 at Malton, onto A169, and this again is a nice if slightly bendy route across Vale of Pickering, fairly flat section. At Pickering, you climb steadily up onto moors, nice wide roads, again some ups and downs, one bad bend at Saltersgate that
    requires a bit of care and good gear choice! Then on run down into Whitby you tackle Blue Bank, downwards. Long and steep, but shouldn't trouble a modern car and well laden van, thousands use it every year. Climb back up other side and then across to site. 

    (Another fabulous doggy friendly place to visit and eat is Perry's Nursery and Gardens in Ruswarp. You can sit on river bank, surrounded by gorgeous gardens, watching wildlife, row boats on river and steam trains over river. Food is delicious, have a tea
    tray, proper high tea with cut sandwiches  and more cream cakes than anyone can eat at one sitting! Dogs are very welcome on leads! Plant sales are great as well!)

    many thanks for the excellent detailed info, that's my route then usually go through Kirby Steven then scotch corner but the m62 then as you describe sounds better and faster. Will have a look at the pert thing Mrs ips likes high tea

    The A64 just east of York is notoriously busy where the dual carriageway turns to single. There are always huge queues at peak times.

    The A169 is twisty but easily do-able, but beware the steep drop down into Sleights......

    Agree Ian, it can get very busy at peak times, although last few times I have used it I had no problems either way, lucky I guess. 

    If you haven't used this route before, it is a nice run, round York, catch a glimpse of Minster, then up past Castle Howard, off at Malton you go past Eden Camp, fabulous WW2 museum, then still best bit of drive across NY moors!

    Can I recommend The Hart Inn at Whitby? It's dog friendly & the fish & chips and scampi & chips we bth had last summer were fantastic and an achievement if you cleared your plate ..... we both managed though Cool

    just to be right, there is no north beach or south for that matter in Whitby! Whitby does have a west and east beach mind! There are some lovely coves and beaches towards both Staithes in one direction and Scarborough in the other if you know how to get down to them. Always check the tides first mind!

    Write your comments here...Sandsend beach is as you say beautiful and can be used for dog walking as far as the bottom steps down to the beach, from there round into Sandsend it's self is restricted from I think it said May to Oct but is ok for dogs heading
    towards Whitby. In Whitby I'm not sure about the beach near the harbour wall but if you go over the bridge you can take dogs on the small beach there. We were there at Easter and we also like the walk from Robin Hoods bay around Boggle Hole but when we went
    the small stream which you can normally cross with ease was running like a river in full flood but again dogs are allowed. When we go to the club site we always go down the road at Ruswarp it can be restricted towards the end with parked cars but we have never
    had a problem and as long as your car and van are matched well you won't have any problems with the hills. Don't forget to try the cafe in the woods, it's about 15mins walk from the site but about 30mins coming back up the hill if you've eaten.
