Wardens in hiding

We were at Pembrey over the Mayday BH weekend and can only deduce that the wardens had given up hope of running a tidy site for a few days.

New arrivals in Friday sped around the site at such a speed over the traffic calming that they must have let the contents of all their lockers in the process.

in the darkness, at 10pm, two vans were allowed onto site to pitch up. About 15 ( probably more like 7 or 8) were then allowed to run free screaming and shouting until the set up process was complete.

come Saturday, someone else arrived to join one of the vans. Parks his sign written sky tv panel van adjacent to their pitch blocking off access to another pitch. It stated there for the duration.

didn't see or hear a warden all weekend - probably in hiding.

Disappointing.  We experienced our first BH Holiday on a CC site last year and were horrified at how the site we had been to only a week before turned into a screaming rubbish strewn race circuit.

Sadly this is the reason we have just returned from an Adults only site.

That is the reason we don't go away at bank holidays.  We are lucky because as we are retired we can make that choice.  I appreciate that not everyone can.

Fortunately we can now go midweek and off peak, so never go at BH times.  Still do some weekends as they're part of a longer stay of course, but only off peak.

When we were away just after Easter we stayed on about 3 Adult Only CLs, and had a good time, also saving a considerable amount on pitch fees.

Same here MH, we stopped going away at peak times since retirement, I'm afraid you only need a few misbehaved people to spoil it for everyone. My heart goes out to the wardens who have to clean up after them.

I've flagged this up in case the Sites Team would like to investigate and, perhaps, comment.

Scarletsfan - someone will be along soon to ask whether you reported this poor behaviour to the warden.

My view is that the wardens are there to manage the site. If they couldn't see all this going on without being told about it, they weren't doing much managing.

It happens far too often that wardens turn a blind eye, for an easy life.

Ian, as this was at 10pm when the kids(?) were making a racket (which is unacceptable BTW) would you expect the wardens to be out and about managing at this time?

Wardens  when out and about can only deal with what they see in front of them, if unaccepatable behaviour happens at the other end of the site how can they possibly see or deal with it unless someone tells them. Speeding is also unacceptable for the earlier arrivals but the wardens were all probably booking people in to ease the BH rush. I want to see speeding irradicated but untill people start taking down number plates what can be done?

I will agree with you that they should have noticed the parked van on the pitch and dealt with it.

Such behaviour is clearly wrong, by both members and wardens and affects people's time away. Report it to the wardens and write in to the club.

In the words of site staff we know "Its the Bank Holiday crowd"and they are more trouble to all concerned, and its normally only 3 bank holidays that are a problem but a complaint from anyone would be looked into,it has got worse in the last decade

Corners - Well for a start, they shouldn't have been let onto site to disturb people at 10pm.

Of course, we don't know how far from the warden's office / accomodation they were pitched or whether the warden would have heard all those kids running amuck.

I'm glad we agree on the van......but why did they even allow it on site in the first place when only one vehicle is allowed per pitch? Maybe a small second car in exceptional circumstaces, but not a large panel van, surely.

This example and others is the reason that Warden's discretion fails the decent caravanners on any particular site and should be discontinued.

I am in favour of clear and non negociable CC on - site rules which apply to all without any exceptions.

Ignoring CC on -site rules being broken is not part of any warden's remit.

I see nothing wrong with any conscientious warden strolling around his/her site during the evening or for that matter at any time.

Is there a LNA area there, some wardens do let you on if you ring and let them know you'll be late for a good reason of course.

Second cars are allowed on pitches (and only on pitches) for a fee and if they don't contravene the 3m rule, but this was parked next to their pitch and blocking an empty pitch wasn't it? totally totally wrong and as you say the wardens should have spotted it and done something about it. If if it was there with their consent then that is totally wrong as well

I too want wardens to do their jobs properly

Up to a couple of weeks ago we were booked on a CC site in the Cotswolds for the Spring BH weekend. After witnessing how chaotic sites can be at these very busy times we cancelled and booked for 4 nights at Field Barn Park, nr Bourton. Just returned this morning, the weekend was absolute bliss. Despite being almost fully booked, the neighbouring units are around 10 metres away, the pitches are that large. Also, due to the way the site is designed in quadrants, no more than half a dozen units can be seen from your pitch and no pitches are opposite each other. The site is adult only (over 30's) so with that comes some peace and quiet, we don't have children so it suits us. Knowing that our favourite local CC sites would have been full to bursting with holidaying familes, this commercial site was a very welcome alternative. Highly recommended.

Write your comments here...Avoiding speeding is everybody's personal responsibility.  Controlling speeding on a campsite is solely the responsibility of the Warden staff.  If they turn a blind eye to speeding, perhaps they are in the wrong job.

Perhaps they are, if they see it and ignore it, but you continue to have this view of wardens as somehow being omnipresent! It's simply not the case - they can't possibly see everything that's going on, unless you're suggesting the installation of a series
of CCTV cameras and a warden designated to monitor them! Wink. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

I agree it's everyone's responsibility to avoid speeding and similarly breaking other guidelines;  where it happens and where folk are sufficiently exercised about it surely wardens are deserving of our support in mentioning it to them?

Unfortunately wardens I guess can't be omnipresent every hour of the day, evening and night. I guess they too have set working hours and should have some 'downtime'. When on duty they should be doing their job but after this they cannot be held responsible for the antisocial activity of the thoughtless few who choose to be a nuisance whenever and wherever they like! I'd bet the vast majority of us understand this!

We have seen wardens walk (or ride their tractor) straight past people incorrectly pitching and invading their neighbour's pitch.

Am I supposed to run after them and point out the obvious?
