West Ayton CC cycle routes nearby?

Hi all

We are off to West Ayton CC site soon. I am just wondering if it is worth while taking my bike with us are there any nice cycle routes that can be done from this site preferably on cycle paths or quiet roads. It says on the site info page that it is within
5 miles of a national cycle route but I can't seem to find any particular routes listed.

    That will be the Scarborough to Whitby Sustrans trail, known as the Cinder track.

    And not too far away you have Dalby Forest, with off road trails for all skills, from novices to World Championship Cross country. The red route is my favourite trail anywhere.

    In the absence of anyone with good local knowledge coming back to you Francis I think from memory the answer is no. It is a main & busy road to Scarborough and I cannot recall any cycle paths. Has the sus trans site suggested there are quiet roads
    there at all. The cycle track from Scarborough to Whitby I think is the one on the old rail line and was quite good when I walked on part of it some years ago but it is a long way from the site to get to it. Regards, Roy

    Thanks for all the replys. Yes Roy it would seem that most of the cycle routes are a bit far away from the site. As I said I don't mind cycling on quiet roads but don't fancy long distance on very busy roads. I have had a look online and it seems there are
    many good off road cycling in the area but none of them seem to start from West Ayton. Also just as a side note am I right in thinking that there is a pub within walkng distance of the site?

    Yes...as you turn off the A170 in West Ayton there is a decent pub that does meals...sure its a 2 for £10 as well from memory. 10 mins walk down and 15 back up to the site!

    Yes...as you turn off the A170 in West Ayton there is a decent pub that does meals...sure its a 2 for £10 as well from memory. 10 mins walk down and 15 back up to the site!

    Francis, as Paul has said there is quite a nice pub in the village. From memory there is also a bee information centre where you can also buy products. Scarborough is very nice to visit and you can get there by bus. Dalby forest is a lovely place to
    be outdoors but it is a drive away but if you went I am almost 100% certain you can park the MH there easily. There is lots of cycling opportunities there but if you went I would not exit the park from the north which is on narrower roads back on to the main
    east coast road. Go back to the A170 route to Thornton Dale, a pretty village where you may get parked on the public car park. Pickering is also very nice and you can catch a train, possible old style steam one, to Whitby or get off at Goathland (Heartbeat
    fame) which I am sure you can get to on bus again. I have not actually stayed on that site myself but have visited it some years ago. Regards, Roy

    If you go into Pickering, park up behind Antiques Centre, better with MH. Thornton le Dale has a huge car park, so no problems there. You might be able to park up under castle at Scarborough, but read signs carefully, Traffic Wardens take no prisoners in
    Scarborough! The railway line is great for cycling, if you can get parked at top of Whitby in big car park just down from Abbey. Have a nice time.

    Hi Roy

    Thanks for all the information it is very helpful. We have visited Scarborough and the surrounding area many times but this is our first time at West Ayton CC site we have wanted to go for years but have never got round to it. We will have our little car
    with us as we tow it on an A-Frame so we will be able to visit the surrounding area in that so won't have to worr about parking the MH

    In that case, for a real treat, and to see Yorkshire at its finest, head down through Lockton, and on to Levisham. Two lovely villages, Horseshoe Inn in Levisham serves great food. You can visit the small station, (which is a mile or so on from Levisham
    village) so much nicer than Goathland, watch the trains, do a bit of walking. True Yorkshire drive though, 1:3 gradients in places!  Riverside Tearooms in Ruswarp is another good food stop as well, again in car, not MH. Great nursery as well!
