Reviews - with a pinch of salt
Whenever I decide on a place to visit, I then, obviously, start looking for caravan sites. I narrow my choice down, then start looking at reviews. I could write a book on what some people put in, for instance, a caravan site, less than 100 yards from the
A49 outside of Hereford, and one person says "I will not visit this site again because of the road noise". Hello, what the heck do they expect? But usually, I do get a laugh out of some of them

You always get the odd eccentric comment, like the one for the Shawsmead club site I remember from a couple of years ago, complaining of being kept awake by the cows mooing in the farm across the road. I always read at least the first half dozen to get a

It works the other way too, you find a site you want to go to, check maps but it's close to a main road. You check out all the reviews but no one mentions road noise, all say quiet and peaceful. When you arrive you find you can see the road and it's like
pitching in a layby !
You wonder if you are on the wrong site.

The presumption that more people will see anything posted in General Chat doesn't really help us champions as we always end up having to move it anyway.

I remember reading a review that someone had left for the Strathclyde Park CC site a couple of years ago. They started off their review by saying "This site is set in a good location very close to the main road network" then near the end they said "however
we won't return due to the excessive road noise due to the proximity of the motorway" I had a laugh at that one don't think they could make up their mind whether the road was a negative or a positive.0 -
There was one I read not so long ago complaining of aircraft noise at Gatwick site I think it was! Barking was my first impression!

The one that always amuses me, at one of our favourite sites, are complaints about train noise at Berwick upon Tweed. The site is located next to the east coast main line. What do folk expect?

People might go once because the CC book says some train noise, but like me will never go back, because the noise from the mainline trains is definitely unacceptable. It's a daft place to put a camp site,right next to a busy railway, when there is so much lovely countryside around Berwick.
We always go the a CL called Paxton Hall Just outside Berwick -- Much nicer area.

Reading reviews on CLs over the weekend. One is next to a pub and the first reviewer states that the Owner allows non CL people to stay on the "CL" if not full but hey, it's OK with that member and they'll go back. Second reviewer mentions awful smell in
pub and find the not recent looking broken sewage pipe behind the pub when taking dog for its constitutional but hey, it wouldn't put them off going back.I read these and think "Which planet are these people from?"
I don't generally bother with CC site reviews. You can use the description in the book plus Google Earth for an overview. Most sites have standard fixtures.

I quite like the ones where someone says they didn't like the way they were treated by the warden on arrival...they then go on to say they arrived at midnight/before dawn/with a van the size of a jumbo jet etc etc I know wardens are expected to be perfect

I have seen a complaint of a bird droppings hitting the car. Frankly this can happen anywhere. Basically ignore the worst and best reviews and try and work out the average.
A quick search on google maps and street view will let you know about the roads.

The above posts from myself and Kennine, very clearly demonstrate the problem with reviews. K clearly finds the noise unacceptable, we find it acceptable. Our hearing is good in case your wondering. Both views are valid. They are just personal interpretations of the same site. Below is a review from a few days ago. Another personal view of the same site.
Lovely site with magnificent views over the sea and the town of Berwick. It is well placed to enjoy the peacefulness of the site and close enough to enjoy all of the amenities of Berwick. We could only stay for one night due to work commitments but we will certainly be back there as soon as we can.

One problem with reviews is that they are often not very comprehensive and many concentrate on the negative rather than giving a balanced view. Noise is an issue that comes up quite frequently and it seems to be something that bothers people in different
ways. Heavy rain on the roof of the caravan/motorhome is usually far worse than any road noise I have come across.David

Worse than rain I have found is stuff falling off trees above in stormy weather - not as regular a noise as rain! Noise only bothers me if I want to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine and views - wouldn't want to do that at Berwick I feel. If it were steam

Funnily enough I read a similar one recently about being near the NEC and there was a a lot of traffic and aircraft noise. I mean really????

don't like that others love.One of our favourites aswell, trains don't bother us. The worst I think we've had of road noise was at Tredegar house, depends where you are on site but some pitches it can be awful. Strathclyde is worse in winter when the trees are not in leaf. Noise is
subjective though I think it depends what you live with at home, we live in a quiet village so for us noise is something we notice more than some others.0 -
Differant people can tolerate differant levels of sound, I live in a very quiet village, although we do get aircraft flying into East Midlands Airport, we have stayed at Tredegar House, but I can't remember the M4 being too loud.
The East Coast Line at Berwick was hardly noticed after the first 30 mins.
The worst noise we had to endure was at Chedder CC last July when the Football Club over the edge had a group playing until around 2am, before we return there, I'm going to check for any music nights at the club.
I, take very little notice of negative reviews, they are usually because the reviewer didn't or couldn't get what they wanted.
