Things to do on holidays
Hope this thread will be used for ideas of things to do when away on holiday. If the weather's not so good maybe people can suggest places that families or friends might enjoy. I was watching the opening of the new Jurassic Centre in Seaton, East Devon on TV last night and the children seemed to be giving it the thumbs up. www.seatonjurassic.org

On our trip commencing Monday we will hopefully get up High Cup Nick, see if the Ospreys are back at Keswick, other wildlife spotting and may get to the Carnforth train Heritage Centre, might even get a chance to shoot a sepia Brief Encounter of Mrs One

Depends where you are, what you are interested in, but this country has some very good museums, large and small, classic and interactive! Some of best we have visited: Bovington Tank Museum (Dorset); National Railway Museum (York); Muckleburgh Collection
(military museum Norfolk); Seabird Centre (North Berwick, East Lothian). Hundreds of English Heritage and National Trust properties. Up to I think eight children free with English Heritage as well, with a member.0 -
Tank Museum kept us happy for a very full day! Marvellous place, and if you are lucky, you can go down the road and watch the Tank regiment playing for real!

We went down to Lulworth one evening at dusk to watch live firing. Biggest fireworks I have seen or heard!
The recreated First World War trench at the museum sticks in my memory OP.
Just thought of another fabulous place to visit, closer to home for me as well. Eden Camp! Just off A64 road going towards Pickering. Ex army base, with around 30 huts all housing different displays, memorabilia, recreated scenes from First but mainly Second
a World War. Lots of outdoor exhibits, children's playground, NAAFI, shop, brilliant place! And on the Club's Great Days Out discount scheme as well. Great for old and young this one!0 -
I can fully endorse the Bovington Tank Museum as a full day out. In fact last year while staying at Weymouth we visited twice over the two weeks we were there, taking advantage of the offer that when you purchase a ticket it can be used as often as you want
for one year.

If your staying at Troutbeck in the Lake District and you get a very wet day (can happen) there are several good all weather attractions nearby. The pencil museum at Keswick is well worth a visit, as is the puzzling place, which really stretches the mind. Kids would love it, not bad for adults either.
The pencil museum is 2 for 1 in the CC Great Savings Guide. Sorry just noticed closed till June due to floods.
Also just outside Penrith is the Rheged Centre, which stages various exhibitions throughout the year. Harris Tweed at the momement, wildlife photography later in the year. Also has a very large screen 3D cinema with a very varied programme.

Another wet day activity? Go down Speedwell Cavern, or indeed any of the other Caverns located in and near Castleton, Derbyshire. Speedwell involves a deep climb down steps, then an underwater boat ride, with someone, guide or visitor, propelling the boat along by walking along the cavern tunnel roof! The more it rains, the better the visit!
Edit: it is a long time since I have been down, so H+S may have caught up, and boat may now be propelled some other way, but I would hope not!

As well as the EH & NT properties we also use our HHA Friends membership to visit some of the larger privately owned historic properties. Don't mind walking pout in the rain really, as long as it's not windy too. Have to do it anyway as the dog always

If staying in York there are plenty of things to do on a wet day, Elvington Air Musuem was brillliant we spent a whole day there and your ticket is valid for a year so you can return if you miss anything. Also in York there are plenty of pubs for a rainy day
. At Chester Fairoaks CC site there is a good aquaruim nearby good for a day out. There really are plenty of things to mention but these are a few that I can think of at the moment.0 -

This one's free (except for the public car park charge.) At West Bay in Dorset near Bridport, apart from shingle and sandy beaches, walks, boats and food you'll find a playground on the left as you approach the harbour. It's a rope playground since the area was famous for rope making. Adults and children can "monkey" around to their hearts content, have a go if you're down that way, there's usually a holiday rally just across the road too.
(I suppose there is a possibility of getting wet but at least the ropes are free.)0 -
