Motorhome on the Isle of Wight

Are the roads on the Isle of Wight suitable for motorhomes. What about parking near the beach & in towns?

    Depends how big your m/v is the "main" roads are fine(what there is of them !! ,the other roads (lanes) are like Devon Undecided fine
    until you meet the "locals"or a busSurprised

    Some pretty large double decker buses find their way round the Island OK. We went a couple of years ago and stayed at Southlands but left the motorhome on site and used the bus.

    Our MH is 6.4m and the IoW is a place we would hire a car if we went again. Last time we had a cvan so sightseeing was no problem with the towcar.

    It's not locals who generally cause the problems, JVB, but visitors who are only used to much wider roads.

    The bus sevice is quite good in the summer months,when we had our last m/v a bus actualy reversed about 100yds for us to get passed,between Southland site and Sandown "the pretty route"Coolit was a bit of a problem last year on the roadworks diversion from Yarmouth to Southland with the c/vanSurprised this year we are staying on the mainland at Black Knowl at visiting my Brother on day trips as we get Free foot passenger trips on the ex Railway route ferrySmile

    I think Triky is a fairly frequent visitor to the IOW, although IIRC, he's a TOAD tower.

    Write your comments here...Not any more C.Y .YES i did tow the Smart to the I.o.W on previous occasions.Very good for exploring the Island.Stayed at two 'Red Funnel ' sites utilising their offers.Only VERY narrow roads i came across were around the wine
    growing area,and garlic Farm.As for parking a M/home ,you take your chances anywhere ,as usual .If in car parks and you overhang two bays ,then pay for both and no problem.Lots of roads have been improved recently too.Lovely laid back atmosphere .ENJOY !!Wink

    We went to the IOW last September in out motorhome, 6m long and 2.34m wide [plus wing mirrors!]. Found the ferry terminals the most awkward places as there is very little space at busy times. The island itself is just like any other 'rural' area of an English
    shire, a mix of good roads, some narrow country roads which need care, and busy urban areas. Anything bigger than 7mx2.3m might struggle off the A-roads.

    Osborne House was the easiest place we found to park.

    The easiest route for acsess is Wightlink  Lymington _Yarmouth with good parking at both ends,we use Black Knowl site out and back
