it's an A class road, so it couldnt be that bad...
The "A" classification does not relate to the width of the road. It is based on the importance of the route in the local area. So where a road is the ONLY road it will be an "A" classification, even though it is single track, with passing places, and grass

I towed our previous van (Sterling Emerald) down the A82, I certainly would not consider taking our current (larger) twin axle on the unimproved section of that road.
Far too stressful, especially in summer, with so many big lorries and tourist buses. OK with a car.

apologies for jumping on to someones thread however we are looking to head over to Loch Lomond for 5-6 nights in July unfortunately no CC sites in that area. I am looking at Cashel, Lomond Woods Holiday Park and Milarrochy Bay (CC&C members only) has anyone
stayed on any of these sites and have feedback positive and negative. Mixed reviews online. We know the route we driving Aberdeen - Stirling - A811 seems to be the best option. Many thanks for responses Elaine0 -

To Glasgow, lots and lots of seasonal pitches, and most loch side pitches get taken or are taken. Found
whole of Loch Lomond area too busy, especially at weekends , lots of campers/fishermen leaving lots of rubbish.Just a little further north is much,much nicer.

We have stayed at Milarochy Bay C&CC site. Usual facilities that you get on all C&CC sites, lovely views, lovely midges. The toilet block (or it was when we went) can only be accessed with a code because the site is on the West Highland Way route and I
suppose they wanted to stop walkers using it. We would stay there again if we were that way. Only thing against is the fact that if you want to go anywhere from the site, you only have the one road in and out, back to Balmaha. The road carries on passed
the site and finishes at Rowardennan. It is a really good site if you like hill walking and if you have a boat it has a slipway you can launch from.0 -
Thanks for feedback much appreciated. Reviews have said about it being very busy at weekends and noisy and rubbish being left - pet hate of mine rubbish left strewn around !!! I believe you need to be CC&C members to access Milarrochy. Cashel you get
a discount if CC&c members. We are not serious walkers and would just go for a roam and the usual site seeing as a long time since we been over there 24 years ago!! it is the start of scottish school holidays so will be busy. cheers elaine0 -
The rubbish strewn around is not on the site but along the lochside from people wild camping and then just abandoning all their gear. It had become such a problem that wild camping has been banned in the area. The problem should be much reduced this year,
if the ban is policed properly.Milarochy and Cashel are on the quieter side of Loch Lomond. Luss C&CC site is on the A82 road side of the loch. It only takes a limited number of 'vans and you have to be an existing member of the C&CC to take a 'van there. (You can't join at the site)

We are going from Loch Lomond to Culloden
Checking the distance and to others that have posted their comments, it is only approx 11miles extra using the Motorways from Balloch- Glasgow -Stirling M90 / M8 etc than the Stirling - A811 to Balloch.
Heeding their advice its a no brainer I'll be using the motorways / dual carriageways.

Hope I answer everyone here!
The Milarrochy site is nice, we stayed there last summer for a night. We arrived just after 12 and were very lucky to get a lochside pitch. Balmaha is about 1.5 miles away and easily walkable, although not suitable for anyone with mobility problems as
there are a few trees and rocks to scramble over!The rubbish situation on the east bank is much improved since the camping ban came in - we walked that stretch on Sunday and I saw very little evidence of rubbish or tat.
Lomond Woods in Balloch is nice - I've never stayed there but we live practically across the road! There's a possibility of road noise from the A82 but the location more than makes up for it - there's loads to do at Loch Lomond Shores or you can even get
the train to Glasgow.We've never stayed at Luss CCC site, it's just too close to the A82 and the noise must be awful.
Another option is Cobleland Camping in the Forest site - it's about 1.75 miles from Aberfoyle with a flat bike path the whole way. A great stop to explore the Trossachs.
The A811 is a pretty road but quite twisty and narrow in places. From Balloch to Stirling, you are only a few minutes longer taking the motorway and it is infinitely easier, as long as you avoid rush hour!

Following on from NickyKnix's post about CLs, I can confirm Gartfairn is a lovely site about a mile from Balamha. There's a footpath running along the road the whole way. I believe they've put in a few hard standings now too.
There's also Dunallan CL outside Drymen (on the now infamous A811 ). There's no EHU but it's a bargain for only £6 a night. You can walk into Drymen from this site.

thank you for the information above never thought about looking at CL sites! Need something to keep 14 year old daughter amused! she keen to be beside the loch. I quite like the sound of Lomond woods so may all depend on what is available, Thanks for
the helpful information about roads and lack of time difference for motorway and A811 daughter gets car sick so motorway would be better. cheers elaine0 -
Lomond Woods may well be your best option for your teenager - it's just off the A82 and Loch Lomond Shores is just a stroll away. It has shopping, cafes, outdoor sports like canoe hire, bike hire and segway safaris, a bird of prey centre, a treetop arial
course, an aquarium... We live close by and we're down there all the time, even if it's just to admire the view!0 -

Can confirm that the traffic noise is awful, both during the day and even through the night. Have stopped once there but never again!! It is also a wet site, or at least it was when we were there.

thanks for that WanderingHans that was what I was reckoning. I think it might be the easier site to get to also. Heard about the aquarium supposed to be good. just need to convince my daughter that lochside may not be the best option. elaine
