Travel insurance
We are planning to travel abroad again this year after a gap due to various health issues and are looking for a company that offers insurance for 70+. I have been told by a friend that Nationwide offer a policy with no age limit as part of the benefits if you open a particular current account that has a monthly fee of about £20. Apparently it also includes cover for car problems as well.
Has anyone made use of this and if so what do they think of it.

You will need to declare your existing medical conditions and get a quote to see if they will cover you .

The account you need to have is Nationwide's Flex plus and the monthly fee is £18 and it provides travel, breakdown and mobile phone insurance. You can find more details on the travel insurance >here<. I use it and have made a small medical claim for an injury without any problems. I have not seen any bad reports about it. Length of trips are covered up to 31 days, but you have to pay extra per trip for more than 31 days and medical conditions. There is no age limit.

When we went abroad we would used Red Pennant but now sadly that is not available in its old form. My wife has a Nationwide account which offered the free version of the travel insurance but even then when you factored in excess for medical conditions it was really no cheaper than Red Pennant. Obviously it depends what medical conditions and those that have been managed over months/years with no change tend to impact less than conditions like diabetes, especially if using insulin and I think there are issues with some blood thinners like those that require regular testing unlike the newer versions.

We both have a Nationwide account that qualifies and got an 'invite'. It appear good value at £18 per month but of course pre existing medical conditions are not covered and you'll have to declare any, and as you have said you have health issues you will have to see how that alters the price. There are plenty of other providers with no upper age limit like Saga (not ours) for example and a number of comparison price sites out there where you put in your requirements and medical conditions for you and whoever else and the 'best' companies and prices are found for you - Go compare or moneysupermarket.
Our current insurance runs out in under two months and we'll compare prices then.

There is a report about Nationwide insurance on another forum under the title "The value of having good breakdown cover" Rather reassuring.

I was looking at this yesterday for our multi trip holidays. In our case the add on for our medical conditions was £60 total. What isn't entirely clear is whether this is for the year (assuming medical conditions stay the same) or is it per holiday. The lack of email address is slightly frustrating. When the time comes to join I will need to investigate further but it does seem to be a good deal.

That's what we found @peedee when we used to have a Nationwide account. As long as you declare the condition when taking it out then it covers all trips during that year. You merely have to tell them if you have any new ones during that period. It used to be great cover when we were paying £11 per month as we were away abroad a lot in those days but as soon as we stopped going abroad on a regular basis, around Covid time, we found no need for it.

We have the NW Flex Plus account, and have never changed to anything else. Yet to see if it suits re travelling overseas, as my OH has a couple of issues, but we have used their roadside recovery for our MH twice (in UK), both times excellent.
If you do go with NW, you might drop lucky an be able to swop bank account with £100 bonus. They will do everything for you. It’s a good bank.
