Romantic Road / Black Forest High Road Germany

Going into Europe for the first time in late April in our new motorhome…starting in Holland for the Tulip Festival and Keukenhof gardens….5 nights booked on a farm site near to Keukenhof so we can wander at leisure then into Germany …….EITHER The Romantic Road south and then a return North on the Black Forest High Road…As we have never done this before what would be the best option ?

thanks in advance :)

Keukenhof Gardens are wonderfull. They were recently featured in Monty Don's series on Gardens on the Rhine. You don't say how long you are away but there is a lot to see on the Romantic Road. Although we mainly stayed on campsites there will be a lot of Stellplatz along the route giving you easy access to the towns and villages.

Hi, I live in Germany and there is loads to do but your choice is pretty good. I would suggest you use the "Camper Contact" App which will give you all the "Stellplatz" as someone has already suggested. You need to check the towns and cities that have exclusion zones depending on how old your camper is. Another thing to watch is the weight of your camper. Lastz but not least an alternative would be the Mosel.

    Have fun

If you have a new camper you might be able to change your headlights for Europe usinf the onboard setup.

Five days at a site near Keukenhof is fine if you are active enough for 25 mile bike rides every day - for example to Leiden and back, then Haarlem and back, then the coast and back. Is that the plan?
We spent one full day at Keukenhof then drove and pitched at an Amsterdam site.
    Horses for courses isn’t it.

Depending on how long you have in Germany I’d say the northern section of the Romantik Strasse (Rothenburg a b Tauber etc) then back via either the Rhein valley (join it at Bingen) or the Mosel valley. Germany is a wonderful country and it’s impossible to see very much of it in one visit. I’m sure you will return to it.

We always used to like the Mosel, and often used it as our last stay before returning to Calais. It's been years now since we went, but we used to use Camping Burgen, between Cochem and Koblenz.

Following a river valley like the Mosel makes for very easy navigating. The Mosel and Rhine both have lots of stellplatz with a least one in virtually every village.

Use the Park4Night app to see your options. It also has very detailed mapping to help identify local attractions and services.

Rothenburg is a medieval time capsule (a bit touristy) but well worth a visit. It has a number of stellplatz to choose from.

I have visited all of the areas/places mentioned in the above post and would like to suggest a journey to the start of the Romantic Road at Würzburg via the Rhine, Koblenz to Rudesheim with a stop off at either/both Koblenz or Rudesheim. Both have campsite with easy access to the towns and the river ferries, Camping Rhine - Mosel at Koblenz is located opposite Deutsches Eck, the point where the Mosel flows into the Rhine and Camping am Rhein. is a first class camping site on the banks of the Rhine on the edge of Rudesheim which is well worth a visit and is just a 10 minute walk away along the riverside cycle way. For a different view of this stretch of the Rhine, consider a day trip on a Rhine ferry between Koblenz and Rudesheim (either direction) and return by train. On the Romantic Road a visit to Rothenburg and the Neuschwanstein Castle is a must. You could still return via the Black Forsest. In the Black Forest we have stayed at Camping Staufen and Camping Kirchzarten, we preferred the latter.

May I suggest that you consider driving down to the Mozel. The whole valley is a beautiful area.

I would recommend that you that you base yourself at Wehlen which is 3km from Bern Kastel, a very popular tourist area and an easy 250 ml drive from Rotterdam ( all motorway and a pleasant run )

The site I would recommend is Mosel Camping, located at Wehlen. We have been going to this site either on our outward or return journey for over 30 years and was owned by friends of ours, now under new ownership and very helpful they are.

It has wonderful views of the Mosel and a variety of pitch types to suit all needs. Excellent motor museum opposite - its the best I've seen! Easy ride along the Mosel into Bern Kastel. Superb wine area!

Good luck with your holidays. We love Germany, everything works!

As far as I know there's only one Wehlen and that's about 380km from Rotterdam - maybe it's 495km (not miles) if going a roundabout way.

OK, I've learnt something new, that there is a second Wehlen but it's miles away from the Mosel river that I think you will be heading for. You want the Wehlen near to Bernkastel-Kues.

Wehlen in @DesTec post refers to a district of Bernkastel so use that town as your reference for mileage.

Worth remembering that you don't have to do it all in one go? I always thought it was a good idea not to do everything so you had an excuse to go back😊
