Foot and Mouth Restrictions entering the EU

Am due to holiday in France this coming June and see that there are restrictions on the GOV website about what you can bring back into the UK. But what about what you can take into the EU? Are all dairy products such as soya-based margarines and soya drink included or excluded? If included in the ban, we could be in for a hard time, as both myself and my Wife do not eat dairy products because of health reasons. Coming back home is less of a problem, as we can buy what we need in supermarkets at home, just concerned whether we could be stopped taking what we need.

Don’t worry. You can buy soya based products in French supermarkets.

See the club's post Brexit info @pegwr33 . There’s a good restriction tab.

Whilst there is a ban on taking meat and dairy to Europe, this does not appear to be enforced.

We have travelled to France 4 times since Brexit, via 3 different routes. As would appear to be the norm amongst the majority of travellers, we have continued to take our first couple of days meals, some favourite items in the freezer and the remnants of our fridge at home.

As Pre-Brexit our van has been entered at times for a quick look around, but the fridge has not been checked. We have also not heard any reports of contents being confiscated from other travellers.

I concur with eribaMotters. It would appear if it is for your own consumption they are not interested. Coming back, in my experience of F&M, they will be pretty rigorous.

We are due to return on the tunnel on Sunday 27th. What checks are we likely to encounter ?

If it is anyth8ng like the last outbreak which was in the UK and we were travelling into the EU, we were searched for meat and dairy products as well as made to drive over a disinfectant mat and wipe our shoes on a similar mat. I am hot on your heels, back on 29th, so it will be worth keeping an eye on some of the more active forums to see if there are any reports as to what they might be doing. It may of course be dependant on where in the EU you have been?

One would imagine that as its a very recently introduced regulation they may initially be hotter on making sure people abide by it by extra checks? Foot and Mouth is a terrible thing but I am not sure how this regulation actually helps. I assume there is a danger that contaminated items somehow it gets into the food chain and is passed on like that?

I'm sitting in the queue at LeShuttle, Calais having passed through customs without any checks for F & M or stowaways.

2 hour delay on the tunnel today.

This topic came up on one of the farming programmes early in the morning on radio 4. There is much concern about the lack of checks at our ports and the issue is being raised.

The trouble is, if you don't eat and discard items, if it gets in the food chain it's the most awful disease and absolutely devastating for the farmer.

    Please be responsible when returning.

At that said - have a fabulous time.

One of the joys of our annual trip to France in our motorhome is never having to worry about eking out the food in the fridge and returning with French cheeses for friends. I really can't see the problem of sealed packs from supermarkets for example. It's all a bit arbitrary when for a month I'll be spending all my time in rural, farming areas often parking on farm fields at outdoor events. So how about banning all traffic…another arbitrary sledgehammer to crack this nut. What I really loathe is legislation that is imposed without discussion and without a clear and acceptable rational.

It seems sensible enough precautions to me, they have made it simple by banning all meat and dairy. Having exceptions for items in packaging would just complicate things in my opinion. We will just run items down as we approach our return date. As far as I can see fish and salad items are OK, so that will do for tea on arrival and we can visit a UK supermarket to restock the next day. It’s not really much of an inconvenience, wine is still allowed.😀

@Muffinn What discussion do you want and with who? We elect a government to make these decisions, after due process, for us and in the best interests of the country. Sometimes they have to be done in a short amount of time

I think there is a clear and acceptable rationale, I remember the last outbreak of F&M which caused horrific problems, including financial loss, for farmers, tourism and the culling of animals. I remember sites being closed which of course was not the biggest problem. I welcome any precautions to stop that happening again. I have to say yours is a relatively small inconvenience to pay for what might happen.

I assume you've written to your MP?
