Overnight stops for 8m twin axle near Basel

We are heading from Calais to lake Garda in the summer. Coming down through France with a stop overnight at Reims which we have booked. Then plan to head for the Swiss border around Basel - then St Gottard tunnel onto Lugano area and on to Lake Garda.

Issue! Can’t find any overnight stop for our size caravan for one night at the French side of Basel or close?

I would normally recommend Camping duCanal at Kembs (about 10 miles north of Basel) . Even though their website says No Twin Axle vans that might be just to keep the travelling community at bay so ask the site owners about it.

Alternatively if heading south down the N66 towards Mulhouse there are several sites listed on line around Cernay and Thann which would surely suffice for an overnight stop.

Is there a reason why you are going via Switzerland rather than Germany and Austria to Lake Garda? You might have more choice of sites in those countries who don't seem to view twin axles the same as the French.

I can’t answer for Max but I would go via Switzerland too - it’s a good 100 miles shorter, it gives me time to pause in Alsace and Switzerland (both of which Iike) and I hated the heavy traffic and road works on the German autobahns.

Hello Max, I live in Germany and here is my take on your Route/Question

In the summer I would take the Swiss route because the Brenner Pass is undergoing serious roadworks with long ques. There is a campsite in Loerrach (Germany) close to Basel which also has a parking place for motorhomes right outside. Lidl is just aroubd the corner and a Pizzaria is on site. You are very close to the motorway taking you into Switzerland. Have a great trip.

Your planned journey to Lake Garda via the Gottard Tunnel is not the obvious route but it’s not so odd as it first appears. The Lueg bridge on the Brenner Pass in Austria is down to one lane each way for the foreseeable future. The Brenner Pass is a busy route at the best of times but these restrictions will cause havoc, especially in the summer. Going that way it will be slow around Milan but there’s little you can do about that.

We’ve stopped at Camping Du Canal in Kembs a few times and I’m sure they would accommodate you for a stop over if you phoned ahead. They’re always very friendly. An alternative to consider, if you make better time on the day, is Camping Gottardo, just south of the Gottard Tunnel exit. It’s an excellent site for a stop over. If you approach the Gottard Tunnel in the evening it will not be so busy and Camping Gottardo is only a few miles further south. There are very few decent stop over sites after Gottardo but there are a few good ones near the A4 east of Milan.
