The old Stamford Site (Fineshade Wood)
Just seen on Facebook that the Forestry Commission is allowing overnight parking on the old campsite hardstandings for £14 a night. No facilities like water/waste or toilet disposal available.

Good to see FC England doing same as FC in Scotland. Mind, it’s a lot dearer for less services.

Slightly puzzling why they took it back from the Club when I imagine the Club would provide a better return? Obviously we don't know what their eventual use of the site will be. I suppose secure parking for £14 a night is not too bad?

Just watched an episode of thr Camping with Kids blog and they stayed there recently. All the old infrastructure is still in place ,although allturned off( people were still dumpingwaste down the toilet waste despite being clear there are no services available.that doesn't really help those trying to promote aire style camping? Itmightbe better for the owners to up the price a bit and leave the water on?the F C dohave staff on sites not beyond possibility.?

They would be better removing the CPD and putting cameras on. If it’s there, the bad campers will use it, a notice isn’t going to stop them. The bad campers spoil things for everyone else, that’s why the Helmsley overnight stop has gone. Needs folks to film bad behaviour, making sure numberplate/ hire company log if applicable is included, then send onto FC, NT, hire companies, let them deal with it.

Personally I think if you provide overnight parking for Motorhomes you should also be required to provide the minimum services of water and grey and black waste disposal. As @Fozzie says the FC must carry some of the blame. Perhaps up the fee to £16 to cover additional costs, but don’t just ignore what is likely to occur if you don’t make facilities available.

Forestry Commission Stops we used in Scotland were excellent. You have to bear in mind these are legal overnight stops, not camp sites, so aimed at MH/Camper users who are fairly self sufficient, can find an alternative water and waste fill/empty point. Two of the three we used had toilets on site that could be used when the visitor centres were open, one had showers as well, as these were on the 7Stanes cycling trail. Plus cafe, plus a shop. We stayed in two free, and the big one, which also allowed caravans, was £8 for the night. Safe, quiet. We came across a black waste disposal that had been provided at Clatteringshaws Reservoir as well, (also had loos and visitor centre) so good provision is out there if you search. It’s perfectly possible to tour in UK now using a mix of overnight stops, Aires, pub stop overs, selected CLs and CS sites for a very reasonable average cost. Throw in the C&CC’s THS as well. We planned our proper stays around CLs/CS, Aires, overnight moving on stops were just that. Pull in, head down, up and off in the morning to our next explore area.
