Hi. I have a Nissan Qashqai with a vehicle specific 7 pin wiring loom and I need to upgrade it to tow a caravan. I keep being told that it is not easy to upgrade but better to strip it all out and start again. Does anybody have any tips or recommendations of anybody who could do it in Kent please?

If you do an internet search for changing 7 pin to 13 pin you will find loads of hits including how to DIY.

As TW says or google for people and places in your area. Tow bar fitters should be able to fit a change of plug for you or you could simply buy an adapter from your local caravan dealer or online. Ours worked well some years ago.

I think I would seek the advice of your local Nissan dealer as changing car electrics can cause problems with the vehicle lights. The alternative might be to use an adaptor depending on how long you are thinking of keeping the car.

We used an adapter until we changed our car. However make sure you secure it with a bungee, Ours dropped down onto the road and wore through the 13 pin cable to the caravan, which needed replacement. There were no further issues once we started using the bungee.

I'm not sure that the suggestions of using an adapter will be adequate. It's not clear if the OP is talking about existing dual 7 pin sockets or a single 7 pin socket. On initial reading I assumed he meant a single 7 pin socket which would only power the road lights and even with an adapter would not power caravan internal electrics.

Thanks everyone. I've done some more digging and the consensus seems to be to start by finding the details of the module that was fitted in the boot originally and see if I can then either replace or upgrade this to include the additional functionality. Thanks for your advice/comments
