Scruffy, or saving the planet?

I often complain at the unkempt nature of French sites in September, long grass, uncut hedges and an end of season feel.

Returning to Black Horse Folkstone, on what in my opinion should be a showcase site for visiting Europeans, I found long grass, pitches looking scruffy and I suppose a “relaxed mowing” regime.

Is this saving the planet? It certainly doesn’t impress me and one could say, if the club doesn’t care about the appearance of the site, why should I?

If you have just returned to the UK perhaps you are not aware of the amount of rain we have had in the past month which might make mowing difficult? 80% of the pitches at Black Horse Farm are hardstandings and of that 20 or so are ferry pitches which are probably used for 12/15 hours at the most. Funnily enough but all the times I have used Black Horse Farm I don't recall seeing many overseas vans on that site, nearly all British.

There is a fine balance between allowing a little less maintenance to help preserve the planet and keeping the site tidy. I have not been to Black Horse Farm this year so cannot speak about that, but the sites we have been on this year still seem to have been closely mown. As we are also a member of the C&CC, I can say their sites do seem to be mown far less than this club, so may be it is this club that need to let the grass grow a bit more. My feeling is the club do overdo the mowing on sites we have visited.

Hi we were at a couple of club sites for 28 days grass had been cut prior to arrival but not touched the whole of the 28 days we were there, time of year was May/ June and August/ September prime growing time,

we would have liked the grass to be cut but are reluctant to ask.
