Big butterfly count 2024
The count is on!
I don’t know about you but I see so few butterflies these days. We have a Buddleia bush and a few species of butterfly do visit it but they, the plant, are becoming increasingly invasive. They can be seen now along the likes of railways the length and breath of the UK and on waste ground. The plant is now out competing other indigenous butterfly plants and causing issues in the natural ecosystems and a possible threat to some species of butterflies and our pollinators.

I agree, it seems to be a poor year for Butterflies. We are getting a good few large and small Whites, some Holly Blues, Speckled Wood, and we had our first Comma the other day. Not too bad for bees, but we have lots of Lavender, Scabious, Nepeta, and Buddleia. I have a very dark purple one, but we have got another of the kind you see on waste ground. That will mysteriously disappear shortly…….

I see there is an initiative to provide insect corridors to encourage our invertebrates to re-colonise old or maybe establish new areas. A piece on the BBC this morning explained how this is happening along parts of our coastline. The piece also highlighted the wonderful successes being witnessed as a result of No Mow May. More required though it seems.
Near us one such successful venture here!
