Republic of Ireland - 8 Foot Wide / Double Axle

Does anyone know the rules for towing an 8 foot-wide caravan with a double axle in the Republic of Ireland? My Irish friend says I will need a 4x4 tow car to comply with the law. I have a UK licence issued before 1997 so I have a Category BE and C1E with a max weight of 8250 kg.
