An old tennis ball with a hole cut in it and placed over the ball will protect it. That used to be a very popular trick. Failing that, tape a poly bag over it - simple!

We once had a dog who believed every tennis ball was hers and used to nick them off towballs if she had the chance😂

I've always had an old cloth and an aerosol of brake cleaner in the locker, then just before hitch up time a quick spray and a rub with the cloth leaves the ball dry and free of any rust/ grease if you're towing a caravan with an alko type hitch with brake pads. If you're just towing a trailer with a normal hitch (lubricated ball) then a squirt of wd40 or white grease will suffice.
