Thanks JK. Reminds me of my ‘apprentice’ years when a rival company set up. They undercut but had a heavy and very regular turnover of staff, it became very apparent that they cut several corners, both of employment law and H&S. Not suggesting anything other here than those old adages, “you get what you pay for” and , “the grass is often greener on the other side”. In both cases costs to the purchaser can be more when due diligence is applied.

As a matter of interest what do you do a when staying on a CL, for instance, and the owners request that you pay in cash?

Presumably terms would be discussed at the booking stage?

I would have it sorted at the phone call stage as in-bank transfer or online pay, failing that I shop elsewhere. CL owners are part of the modern world NTF they are primarily business minded which can be attested by them moving with the times & increasing fees rather than allowing greedy people to ruin them, good question👍🏻

That is what we do, and if the owners request cash, as many do, we ensure that we have more than sufficient to pay the fee. No problem as we get additional cash as needed when shopping, which we must do every week.

We have a Chinese Takeaway like that, even through COVID it was cash only! I suppose with the likes of CL's you would expect a number of them only to accept cash, particularly the smaller more basic ones. We don't use many CL's but the last three we have used all accepted credit cards which was easy. I would have thought the easy route for most CL's that don't have the facility of taking CC's would be a BAC's transfer, not quite so convenient for the customer but would save having "loads of money" hanging around and the need to bank it at regular intervals? Having watched TV programmes like "The Gold" you do get rather suspicious of people and businesses that only deal in cash

With the CLs we have used in the last year it has been pretty much 50/50 cash or cheque v credit card payment, with quite a few also offering or requesting bank transfer. We just ensure we have enough spare cash available in our current account if we are unsure.

Where we live in a rural area cash is used for events and fund raising etc. I expect some CLs will gradually upgrade their banking habits but I respect those who don't feel pressurised into changing their habits just yet.
Our chip shop is a mystery and everyone complains, no money, no chips. Luckily there is a cash machine nearby.!

We are like you Nellie, happy to pay by BACS, etc…., but will take cash if it’s required.
I am happy with more cashless shopping, Apple Pay especially. In my early working days, I had to lug several thousand pounds worth of cash daily to the Bank, and it was no fun. We did have one Member of staff attacked, thankfully he was ok, but badly shaken. Things changed from then on.

Quite a few CLs are run for pin money or money that never sees the books or simply that money in their hand doesn't have anything deducted from it for charges and we often have to seek out an ATM, usually at a supermarket. Doesn't bother us. We'll use BACS or Cheque happily enough. Owners shouldn't be pressurised into cashless if they don't want. Some encourage it, such is the diversity of CLs.
I once had to handle an insurance claim from a client who was hijacked on his way home in his car by armed robbers. They'd sussed his route out and ironically he was taking his receipts home from his butchers shop as walking to the bank in his town was too dangerous.

I am sure it's all relative but with many CL's being £20 a night or more that , to me, is a lot of cash to have to carry around unless you are only staying one or two nights. Given the hoops you have to jump through to buy a few hundred Euros for your holiday due to money laundering regulations I am surprised there is not a maximum cash transaction limit in the UK.

There is a maximum you can withdraw in a day. If we are paying cash, we simply get out what we need, stick it in an envelope and hand it over on arrival. That said, it’s a while since we had more than a week on any CL, and for a lot less than £20 per night, so we wouldn’t be carrying much. Quite a few CLs still take cheques as well. If you have a cheque book of course🤣 It all we use ours for nowadays. Most CLs are happy doing all sorts of payments if they can. Handy to have a few real Schekels around for buying stuff from honesty boxes, roadside sales, ice creams as well.
Eggs, milk, honey, jams, lemon curd, fresh veg, fruit, cakes, scones, chutneys, plants, flowers, bread………..it’s another world on CLs, a very nice one.😁

There is a max limit but it’s much more than you'd carry around in your wallet. It's several thousand pounds.

At least it covers a Club Site mid Summer🤭 Definitely want to be paying electronically nowadays.

Try and go into a car dealership with a suitcase full of cash and you'll see what a limit is dd

Try this for starters but I don’t think it will affect CLs who ask for payment in cash.

No ridicule at all, DD, just reminding you of an avenue you said you utilised yesterday.

A manager where I used to work was a budding Arfur Daley .... he went to buy a boat & took a carrier bag of cash with him. I've no idea how much or where it came from but he had the tax man knocking on his door after the seller reported him 🙄

But there is a limit at which point a trader has to engage with the special measures. As I said it is unlikely to affect CLs or even CAMC which is what we were talking about here.

Well if all this is true its a bit sad really. Health and Safety gone mad. Does this mean if a farm wants to sell free range eggs by the roadside the H& S man will be down on them ? The simple solution for CAMC is to sub contract their shop operation and charge a fee to the contractor. The Club then has no liability but does have a formal income stream
