Caravan Fire
Anyone seen in the news about the fire at the campsite in Bolnuevo, Mazarron in the early hours of Monday? A whole row of caravans destroyed, luckily no one hurt. I saw it in the Murcia Today newsreel. Thing is it's the fourth caravan site fire the region has had in the last year. I've stayed several times on that site as it's a great location and straight out onto the beach. But it's the tightest packed place I've stayed at. You wonder why we maintain spacing here!

Have used this site a lot but after experiencing a minor BBQ fire a couple of years back, and seeing how they were packing them in I changed sites, but it is difficult to find a Spanish site that does have suitable seperation in place.
were they caravans or MH's,?, I did visit the site in December 22 and it was rammed with predominantly MH's and one of the big problems was, you had a very large MH on pitch together with a very large trailor, so not only was the seperation not in place between pitches, you also had pitches that were rammed with a MH plus a very large trailor, car, and in some cases a couple of motor cycles, and people were sat outside around an open pit fire, disaster waiting to happen, there was also a lack of fire extinguishers that were working.

You can see a set of steps as normally used with caravans, Rufs, so I expect the headline is right.

I dare say both caravans and MHs were involved but It's the terrible event that matters, not the type of unit.

Yes terrible event and thankfully the report says there were no casulties, but when you see a pitch with a motor home the size of a 90 seater coach on a pitch with a lounge built on the side that had a sofa and chairs that would probably not have fit in my lounge , together with a trailer that obviously carried all the metal used to build the lounge and a car, which, had a trailer on the adjacent pitch and the two were almost touching, you know if things go wrong they are going to go horribly wrong.
BN seemed to have a policy of "if you have paid for a pitch you can do what the heck you like within the boundaries of the pitch", you should visit BN during June/July/August when the Spanish come out to play, then it is probably more caravan orientated, this is a real eye opener., especially when they have very large open BBQ's actually out in the road between the pitches, and this is at 0100 hrs in the morning.

All the more reason to use sites with sensible spacing.

Interesting point about fire extinguishers. If you've ever been to LaManga site which is another crammed in place it's hard to find one at all and if you do it's never been serviced or checked. I saw a fire hose with so much sun damage it was littered with holes. Shocking risk.
There are as AD states plenty of sites with lots of space but there's also plenty that don't. Just because an incident hasn't occurred in years doesn't mean it won't.

visited but never stayed, and never would, could be wrong but i think the club promote this site, 5 stars, in their overseas brochure.
BN had them but many were damaged when we stayed, but mainly we used the site April thru mid June when it was only 50% occupied so never felt really in any danger, did once have a beach side pitch, never again, we spent 3 months sweeping sand out of the van and awning.
This site, in 1989 also suffered from severe flooding with caravans bobbing about in the med, they have since moved the site further away from the rambla

well when the site was predominantly caravans, spacing was not such a big issue as many pitches were of the larger variety, it was only when monstrous motor caravans started to arrive that spacing became a problem, so we did stop using the site.
