I think we need to get real here. The Club are very unlikely to check individual travel destinations and travel plans. It will simply default to “take out travel insurance”.
An illness or accident within the 21 days might be a tad different, there will be a Docs note (good luck getting one of those for nothing) or a hospital trail to follow, but I still think that the default will be claim on your insurance.

You are probably right ,and as this club keep reverting to your travel insurers when any thing about deposits etc is mentioned
Do they probably do not care that the prices are of nsurance policies for the age of the many members that keep sites viable off peak is very expensive
But then as hinted at some time ago , there may be a policy available from this club?

I hanker for those not so distant times when we were trusted to book what we fully intended to use, for those times when we were frequently reminded that double or speculative booking was not a significant issue and that deposits were not needed for the membership.
That was the real club at its best!7 -
It still shouldn’t be that difficult. I don’t see any refund of deposits occurring automatically, unless it is the CC that has closed the site. You are going to have to ring and ask for it. The advisory areas are normally fairly large, they know where you live and where you were going, not that complex to check if one will affect your journey.

On reflection I am so glad we cancelled our trip to Chatsworth this week because the weather has actually turned out to be a lot worse than it was predicted 10 days ago. I am sure we would have been as snug as a bug in the motorhome but I am getting too old to have to cope with possible weather related difficulties and the possible stress. In those circumstances the loss of a £27 deposit would not have concerned me at all. I would have saved more in fuel costs and other campsite fees so deposits are only a small amount of the total potential costs of going away on a four night trip. Now, had it been a commercial site which I would have had to pay up front I would have probably lost the lot so from that point of view the Club is pretty fair in restricting the loss to just the deposit?

I’m surprised a motorhomer is saying this. Our tours, like many like us, can be for weeks, on occasions a month or so on end and we can travel the length and breadth of the country. We never go home before moving on to the next site so knowing our home address is not much help to them. I do agree mind that the onus is now upon us to ‘argue’ our case, not brilliant is it and probably not as simple as some suggest it might be.

Could be because we do our longer tours at times of the year when snow is not a problem. At this time of years it’s only for a few days. As the OP is about snow I suppose I was fixed on that. Of course it could apply to other events like very strong winds and floods. However, again they know where you are going and hopefully they would accept you were being honest about where you were coming from. Of course if you were already on a CC site you could stay there without loss, if they had room.
I agree that arguing a case is not likely to be easy and if it takes as long to get through on the phone as some have said, possibly not worth the effort, given you may well fail. Perhaps that’s there plan.0 -
It’s very cold here at the moment. Cold enough for our outside taps to be frozen up, despite precautions. We have been on Club Sites (Durham Grange, Nunnykirk, etc…) where the water taps have frozen, and there was only one point on site to get water from. Anyone know what happens with serviced pitches? Are they well insulated, or do they freeze? And if they do freeze, did you get any reimbursement or just stand the extra cost?

We had a service pitch at Chatsworth when there with our caravan a few years ago in December. The tap froze up several nights and didn’t thaw out until the afternoon. However, the hoses and waste tube were the main issue it took me ages to pack up. Must admit didn’t ask about reimbursement, I assumed it was my risk if I booked one at that time of year. Although the on pitch CDP still worked, just not the tap.
We we’re at chapel lane during a beast from the east and everything froze. The only place we could get water was the pot washing sinks.

Had our service pitch tap frozen at Castleton this year hadn’t to fill up at another tap.

If you Google Caravan Skiing you will get a lot of information about coping with cold conditions - in a caravan or a motorhome.

DK. For what it is worth, living in Chesterfield, and having seen loads of caravans and MH's going into and around the Peak District, I'm afraid you missed a generally good weather week - up on the tops even if not in the valleys. But I agree, it could have been so different on the roads.

I am sure we have. We have been to Chatsworth in the winter when it has been below freezing but as we are getting older we have to take into account other hazards as well. I think the problem was more at our end rather than Chatsworth. Whilst the main roads here are perfectly clear where we live is a bit like an ice rink, not surprising given that at about 7.00am for the last two mornings it's been -8!!!

Something along the lines of "Hard Chedder, you should have kept up with the long range forecast and cancelled your booking over 21 days ago!" would be my guess.😁

Reading the new T&Cs with regards to the booking system should turn most members into cynics, JK, imho of course. There have been some horrendous tales so far of members chasing deposits which should have been returned to them without lots of agro.

So, with a million site nights booked since the new system was launched, three quarters of those bookings done via the website / app, and cancellations under 5%, I don't think the majority of people are cynical nth in my opinion.
Oh, regarding the op, there is and have always been a system in place, not changed much since I started.

We have just faced this issue. Currently on one club site and due to travel to another. We rang and requested to stay on current site for an extra night and delay and cancel one night on next site doe to the snow forecast.
Very helpful head office staff cancelled at no cost the planned night and we had to book directly with our current site as they couldn't change bookings for where we were already. So, no extra cost and it has snowed!
