I am wondering if it is a good thing or a bad thing to consider ordering up an all over cover for the winter months. I see mixed advice some saying it,s a good idea others saying that the wind will destroy the cover and damage the van. I,m taking into consideration the gales that we get in this area of the country, especially after the severe gales we experienced last year. Any advise or guidance would be appreciated. I am considering going through Specialized Riverdale House,
Dockfield Rd,
Shipley,
BD17 7AD

If you keep a van outside then I think it is the only sensible thing to do and put a cover on. They are breathable but keep your pride and joy clean and protect paintwork.

The only advantage of a bespoke over a generic is convenience of access and not  thequality if buying a known name.

We had a Protec cover for our previous van, for 10 years, used in winter, and a very lightweight "summer hat" primarily to keep off the sticky sap etc from the lime trees up our road.  We will be ordering a fitted full cover for the new van shortly.  In virtually all cases they also have the advantage of hiding what specific van of that size you have underneath, so possibly less tempting for the light fingered fraternity.

We have a Protec cover, and swear by it. All manufacturers will warn about use in severe wind conditions as buffeting and billowing may cause damage, especially to windows, so you would need to take that into consideration and be prepared to remove it if needed.

On the other hand, what about damage by sun, birds and flying debris if you don't have one?

I also think they help with security. Its an extra item that any potential thief has to remove

We brought a winter cover for e of our vans but as we started touring all year round it remained in its original packaging.  In our case it was really a waste of money

Another vote for Protec.  We have had two on different caravans.  Our latest one is the ‘easy fit’ system which is much easier to use.  We have had  our present one for 8 years and wouldn’t be without it.  Never had any problems with high winds as the material is very strong.

We have a Protec towing cover and have no problems, however, in their instructions Protec stress the importance of washing the windows prior to fitting to avoid the cover scratching the surface. The same would apply to a full cover so if you're going for a cover I think it really should be bespoke to ensure a good tight fit. We don't have a cover on our van. Fenwicks do a great pre-winter wash which protects from moss, mildew etc. and if you're going to wash the van before fitting the cover why not try this product first? Our VIP is 16 years old and still gleams like new.
