Just turning up on CL

this week were booked on a cl, and we went out for a day returning in the evening, and there was a motorhome on the next pitch hookedup and the owners were inside relaxing, after a while a campervan drove slowly along the site looking at all the pitches and turned round and went to wait near the gate, next thing the cl owner came and had a word with the motorhome and they had to leave and the campervan then parked on pitch next to ours, while having a chat the next day it turned out the motorhome was booked on another cl, but couldnt find it so drove onto ours and just parked on empty pitch,  without phoning to ask if the spots were free.   question is how many would just drive onto a cl and pitchup.

    I read of an instance a few days ago where a member had arrived at a CL, pitched up and next morning the owner knocked for his fee.  It was only at that point that the camper realised that he was on the wrong CL because he'd already paid prior to arrival.

    We were on a CL last year and after a day out we got back to find an old converted camper-van on site.  They changed their water, emptied their waste and rubbish, stayed for an hour or so then drove off, never to be seen again.  On asking the owners a day or so later (when we next saw them) they had no idea who they were!!  Cheeky or what!

    I know many CL owners have lots of other things to do but maybe a good case for 'walking the site' at least once a day would help.  This is something I actually think all sites' staff should do.

    Some years ago we were on a site in the Cotswolds and a motor caravan was using a remote service point where we pitched  the warden came and there was quite a heated conversation 

    It transpires the the said motor caravan had arrived in site and asked if they could drive round the site to have a look as his wife was not able to walk.the warden came to see where they were 🤔

    Only once most club sites it is usually more than that already

    where we are staying they fast track arrival s on a Friday to keep the road outside clear of arrivals 

    It is quite obvious that some do not return to the office as they have not received the barrier card because they  cannot exit so another job for site staff to have to look round the site to find the non returners

    We've been on a site where that has happened Jill. Owner did question the member on the first day but put it down to her husband not making a note of the booking. Next day the nearby CL owner rang up to see where member was and he realised he was on the wrong CL!

    We did have a similar occurrence whereby a Campervan appeared on a site late one night and was gone by 7a.m. Transpires he had an arrangement with the owner as he had some occasional work related business in the area and called to see the owner with a cheque at the end of each month to pay up for nights spent. Owner quite happy. CL was big and the campervan man extremely quiet. Anyway there was only 4 on the CL when we were there.

    They might whizz past on their tractors to empty bins several times a day always looking the other way from the person who's parked half a mile from the peg but they certainly don't all walk the site on the club sites I've visited.

    I think you need to use sites more often? with many new members and staycation members it seem the site staff spend plenty of time on site sorting them outsurprised

    And as the majority of sites now have the two peg pitch markers  off peg would be difficultwink

    I think this is something CL owners can sort out without too much concern from other site users and as you point out the situation isn't always "as seen." smile

    I don't spend my life in my caravan as I do have other interests in my life but generally use club sites at least once a month all year round so that puts your comment about the need to use sites more often out of place.  

    As for the two peg system, it wasn't in evidence on the last site we visited last month - Wharfedale.

    Ah……..🤣 Few years ago, we booked a CL pitch at a lovely site not far from Bridlington. Winter touring, I used site directory to find site in dark. We pitched up, had our evening meal, and only then did it dawn on us that we were on the wrong CL😬🤣 We duly rang the CL we had booked, and explained, luckily they thought it was hilarious. We also knocked on CL owners door and explained why we were there unannounced. Again, they were in stitches at us. We paid for our night, then left and went to the one we had booked next morning. I did offer to pay for our mistake, but they weren’t bothered, just amused. We have been back to both CLs since. Both CLs were at the top of the directory page, that’s were the confusion came in. That’s the excuse I am sticking with 🤣🤣

    the last CL we went to, we arrived mid afternoon on the Wed, phoned up to ask if there were any particular requirements of us, got told to pitch where we wanted & someone would likely call later to collect monies etc. On the Sun, we decided that we should go looking for that someone so we could pay!

    I'll not say how many units were on site ....

    Because some get upset if there are more than the max 5 units .... in this case there were 8 at one point but still loads of room.

    Differentiating between two CLs in close proximity is not an exact science and signage often leaves much to be desired. The CL sign is often insufficient to confirm it's the correct one. A big one declaring "Donald Duck Farm CL" would help on these occasions.

    An owner perespective..

    An increasing number of CL Owners now implement some kind of booking system with automatically generated emails that confirm the name, location and date of stay.  This 'paper trail' written record is useful for all concerned.

    In addition, the adoption of What-3-Words by many CLs has improved the accuracy of finding a specific entrance.  I know of 3 or 4 CLs that share the same postal code, and in rural areas the same post code can be almost a mile apart.  I know that die-hards prefer a Logitude and Latitude, but although I'm a qualified navigator, I think W3W is actually easier!

    Signage of the CL is important of course, but the restriction of Local Authoriites and neighbours on signage mean that it is not always possible to put up large signs.

    As for the drive-in, dump & drive-off brigade, I, like many other CLs have coded access gates to my farm for this (and many other) reasons..

    W3W is OK if your satnav accepts that as an input. That's why I, as an unqualified navigator, prefer Lat/Long. At least I no longer have to factor in tidal currents and leeway.

    Even an identifying sign on the gate would be an improvement for some places. Difficult to differentiate farms that identify with 'spaghetti westerns'.
