TOWING SOCKETS

Ihave  a 2 socket system   and  last week  i hit a big  bump in the road  and i knocked out the two sockets , i didnt notice till we got home  and just wires trailing 

the socket holder is as high of the ground  as possable any idea's ?  is there clips you can get /tie wrap? help  Sandra

    What I imagine from your description is that the cables on the caravan have become detached from the A-frame. They may have just come out of the clips or the clips failed.  Tie-wraps are fine to hold the wires up again, but do check that the cables and plugs are undamaged, and make sure that once tie-wraped into position there is sufficent slack to allow full movement when turning.

    Hello

    sorry to hear, bumps hitting the sockets don't normally happen so I'm guessing that it wasn't the bump that hit the sockets but somehow the bump pulled the wires out of the sockets/plugs as perhaps they were pulled in some way? Were the wires overly tight or dangling too much? Also do you mean the sockets attacked to the car or the plugs?

    This has happened to me but with no bumps I just hadn't left enough slack for going round a tight corner. It's amazing what damage the sockets get when being dragged along at 50 mph.

    the  sockets that go into  the car from the caravan  have gone  just leaving  the  wires with sredded ends ?

    I'm lost as to what has been pulled out of what .... cars have sockets & caravans have plugs. I doubt the sockets on the car had enough slack for them to reach the ground or even be hit in the first place. And if plugged into the car, how did the plugs from the caravan mange to trail on the floor? Take the car &/or caravan with the shredded ends to a local towbar fitting place & they'll sort it it for you.

    That sounds like the plugs. Sounds the same as what happened to us and it happened only a few year ago so it can happen even to most the experienced of us. 

    Maybe as you have to replace them now is the time to have a 13 pin plug fitted? It rotates and clicks into place and only one socket to deal with. You'll need the car sockets replaced as well or buy a cheap adaptor?

    the next question would be .... how do I re-align my caravan's plug? 🙄

     There is a tool for that.  Only a couple of quid if you can't borrow one.
