Hi I am thong my caravan from South Wales to the Bakewell area and want to know the best caravan towing route, I will be coming up the M5 I usually go around the M42 towards Norfolk, but it seems I can continue up the M42 or up the M6 toll.

Another route seems to be M5/M6 and come in from Stafford /Stoke Area.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

We've just come back from there, albeit not towing. But in the past we'd have gone M6J14 (I think) to Stafford, Uttoxeter and Ashbourne to get to Bakewell. Fairly straightforward towing. If you want to avoid the M5/M6 junction which was horrendous going north, in the past we've come off the M5 north of Worcester and headed through Ombersley and Kidderminster, busy but not as bad as the motorway junctions. (I can look up the exact details if it would help you.)

Where are you staying, out of interest? Can suggest lots to do in the area and places to eat if you're not familiar with it.

    Good luck.smile

I would go north from Birmingham on the A38 dual carriageway (which bypasses Burton and Derby) as far as Ripley, then north west on the A6 for the last few miles to Bakewell. But time of day and day of the week may prove critical in deciding how you pass Birmingham.

Generally if heading from the SW/S Wales we'd avoid any "pretty" routes (as OH calls them) and go north via M5/M42 then M1 near Castle Donnington leaving the M1 via the Chesterfield route and straight on to Bakewell.

PS you don't need the toll route just keep heading north towards the M1.

Towing, this would be best route, get the journey over, dump the van, then enjoy. Lots of inclines, descents, twists, turns, pinch points in towns and villages going the “pretty ways”. Neither Buxton or Bakewell are that easy to get to from major routes. We have used M’s suggestion via Uttoxeter and Stafford, but with a small MH, or solo.

Some of us head off for Norfolk via the Midlands and use bits of the M42/M6 to either head east or north....sounds complicated but it works. wink
