NC500 and food larder abuse by tourists

I've learned that some tourists on the NC500 route, that rather poisoned chalice for the regions it passes through, have been helping themselves to food in the Assynt Food Larder in Lochinver, a provision for those less well-off locals to access useable shop left-overs.

This seems like adding another insult to injury, and won't do anything to improve the reputation of those of us who like visiting this part of the world, which while it has its rich, also has a lot of people struggling.

In answer to a query I sent them,  the Assynt Development Trust has just added a donation link.
If anyone else is minded to help redress the balance a bit, it's at:   https://www.assyntdevelopmenttrust.org/assynt-food-bank

Apparently adding "Food Larder" into your ref. will make sure it goes in that direction.

I have enjoyed using community shops in remote places and left recommended price or even donated more but that is a totally different thing to these food banks and their despicable abuse. Sad times!

Here’s another although members on another forum seem to think it’s a non-story as there’s no evidence 🤷🏻‍♂️.

No doubt you’ve read the rather snipey thread on Fun that I refer to. Takes all sorts, eh?

As for 'two sides to a story' that one is absolutely true in all walks of life.

The "story" has been rejected by the people who run the food bank, they even say that some campervanners have contributed to the food bank. Sounds like one of those "pass re-enforcements we're going to advance" stories. wink

I follow quite a few forums but not all LV related. I find it can add another perspective to the subjects discussed here👍🏻.

I find these type of stories sad in 2 ways.

Firstly, if it is true then it is sad (with added anger thrown in) that some people are basically depriving those who are worse off than themselves of vital food.yell

Secondly if it isn't true (with even greater anger added in) for the way some people just wish to make trouble for innocent tourists who may very well be adding to the food stores.yellyell

Inevitably, truth is often the first victim in these stories. frown

    Thanks for these various comments.

I'll try the link again, without rendering it as a hyperlink. It's
     https://www.assyntdevelopmenttrust.org/assynt-food-bank

If I just copy and paste that from my entry here it works, if not, the technology's beaten me, sorry!

Two sides to each story - that's usually true. This weekend's  thoroughly busy, but if I get time I'll write to the people there and ask them. They were certainly pleased to receive a donation, and didn't say "Oh no it didn't" when I mentioned the report in my message to them.

Thanks to TW and others who looked further into this story. It does indeed seem I inadvertently started a false hare - comes of not having time to research the report properly.

I contacted the Assynt organisers directly, and they've replied that they've now looked into this, and it seems there's no evidence to support the story after all.

So that'll teach me to research my sources better.

It remains the case, sadly, that the NC500 does create such feeling among the locals that someone started the story in the first place.

    Have a good weekend.

    Richard.  (HH)

Thanks for making the effort to check it out, HH. We now have it from an official source that it was indeed a non-story and I'm pleased to learn it is so.
