can anyone explain how to obtain pass/toll for a 4000kg motor home for Switzerland. Looking at official websites seems to centre around commercial vehicles and not easy to follow.

I don't know if it has the answer but the Toll Tickets website usually has a lot of information.

John,  You cannot buy in advance.   You go into the customs office when you arrive at the Swiss border and show the documentation giving the weight of the vehicle and tell them how many days you will spend in Switzerland. They will charge a fee which used to be CH 3.25 per day with a minimum of CH 25. - so 7 or 8 days (Those costs may be higher now.) . It’s a heavy vehicle tax called PSVA and applies for all roads and it also applies for days parked on a campsite too. The specialist motorhome forums have much more information and will be more up to date than I am.  .Does that start you off?  Hello Google!

PS .  And the curious fact is that this system means that for anyone simply driving through Switzerland to get to Italy and back again means it’s cheaper to get a PSVA ticket for a motorhome over 3500kg than it is for a smaller motorhome which would need an annual vignette

You can now obtain a Swiss toll pass for 3500kg+ vehicles in advance of your trip - search for the Via App for your smart phone.

If you're just transitting through Switzerland, the 10 Individual days option becomes very worthwhile as it is valid for 12 months.  I used it for two return trips to Italy in successive years at a total cost of just less than £25.

I concur with JimE, I have had the app for a few years and will be using it in May.    The 10 day ticket is by far the best value.  On my last trip I bought a ticket on-line in September to go to Tuscany and used the same ticket the following June to go to Garda.    Very simple to use.

I use Toll Tickets for Italy.
