Winter travel in French mountains

In another discussion the question on the need carry snow chains arose. Here is what the FICC say:

Winter tyres mandatory in France
Since 1 November 2021, all private cars, utility vehicles and motorcaravans must either be fitted with 4 winter tyres or carry fabric or metal snow chains for at least two of the vehicle’s drive wheels when travelling in any of the country‘s mountainous regions (Alps, Massif Central, Jura, Pyrenees, Vosges and Corsica). This ruling applies until 31 March.

They state that you can carry fabric grips by this I assume they refer to what we know as snow socks. For winter travellers this would be the cheapest option at about £50 a set for many of us when we rarely have a need to use them.

    WTG, fairly typical of France  where local Mayors have a lot of discretion!  Looking at the second link it looks as though the East and West routes are not included but the centre route using the A75, not surprisingly, is.
