Brittany Ferries and Bikes new Policy

Just thought I would bring it to the attention of members that Brittany Ferries have a new policy  for MHs carrying  bikes on a rear bike rack, be it mounted on the MH or on a Tow bar.

The new policy is that you will pay £10 each crossing. This is a charge that will be made even if your overall length is below the  6m, 7m or 8m  length you fit into.

We have a 6.3m PVC with a tow bar mounted bike rack, in the past BF asked for the overall length of the outfit and then charged accordingly.

This meant that our outfit at maximum length with bikes came in at 6.75m so still within the 7m we were paying for. Under the new policy we now have to pay extra for the bike rack. This means that we will pay more than a 7m outfit despite still being under the 7m's. I know its not a lot but its the principal that counts. Ferries work on length and height.

This morning we have had a telephone conversation with a manager at BF who is going to look into this issue as she admitted herself that it does appear to be 'unjust'  as caravans and cars that carry bikes on the roof of the car are not charged extra if the bikes are still below the height of the caravan.

When/if we get an answer from BF I will update this post.

In the meantime its just to bring members attention to the new policy.

Hi TG, Thanks for the info.

As you know I will be contacting the club travel service to check they are in line with BF regarding height supplements, where there is a roof mounted item on the tow car but the height is still below that of the booked van height.

It is possible that we will be using other than BF this year so may need to make a few more inquiries as the travel service site says to state total height of car including roof load except for BF!

I wonder what the policy will be for cars that carry bikes on back or across the front of the caravan?

According to the person OH spoke to today at BF, if a car was to have a bike rack on the rear it then it would pay the supplement even if it was still within the length of the price band.

Caravans with bikes on the rear will also get a supplement added to the cost.

I can see that BF are not going to be very popular with some folk.

Ferry rates have always worked on length and height, to then add a supplement while still under the quoted length of the price band is just underhand and not just.

If/when BF get back to us (I fully expect them to stick to their policy) I will make it quite clear that they will lose any future business from us and  I will also stop recommending them to friends and family as well. We only used them this year due to having a voucher from 2020, if we didn't have to use it, we would have booked the tunnel instead as its £300 cheaper and only add 1 more night and site to the journey.
