Annecy, France to Balaton, Hungary

As a family we will be taking a long trip this summer across Europe towing our caravan.  Part of the trip will include travelling from Annecy to Lake Balaton in Hungary (to see friends and family).  Can anyone help with finding the best route to take please?  Via Italy and Slovenia seems to be the most direct route, but I have no idea what the roads are like if we went that way.  Are the mountain roads suitable and safe for towing?

Via Switzerland, Munich and through Austria is another option.

Any help on what would make for a smooth (but long) trip using main roads as much as possible would be great.
