If it's what I think it is it just means that all those that passed there post 1997 now have the same towing weight entitlement  as those that passed prior to 1997. So no need for an extra test if you wish to tow a combined weight greater than 3500kgs.

I think it means anyone with a driving license can now tow any weight of caravan no matter when they passed their test. If you passed yours before 1999 (I think) then it won't make any difference to you at all.

Sorry TobyLeeds - I went away from the screen but the answers above cover it.

So does this amendment cover overweight motorhome too? - as I understand it a motorhome weighing over 3.5 ton required the extra test.

Not  as far as I am aware, If only they wouldl increase the weight limit for the B licence to 4.25Lhms I would be happy. Realistically anyone over 70 should have to undergo tests to continue to drive especially eye sight.

Glad I'm not the only one who's been following this legislation make its way through.

I can finally tow the caravan that we just bought without my dad having to sit in the passenger seat 'supervising' me!

Agree entirely another David - but motorhome owners will be in trouble as electric batteries are introduced increasing their weights and requiring an extra test - even with a basic model.

The change in legislation does not in any way affect category C and C1 licences applicable to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. It does not automatically extend such licences to CE or C1E entitlement.

No, it does not cover either "over weight motor homes" or even over weight caravans.

It is nothing to do with overweight, but towing limits, and as such it brings exactly the same advantage to post 1997 licence holders, either motorhomer or caravaner.

Equally, "we" can drive any vehicle up to 3500 kgs [max vehicle weight], and tow anything that specific vehicle can legally tow.

Precisely the same for each option, motorhomer or caravanner. Plus, equalising things between those with post 1997 licences, with pre licences.

I don't think for a minute that TobyL was being literal when he said 'over weight' .... it was a question about whether a 'new' licence would allow someone to drive a MH over 3.5 tonnes

Okay, but this change is as said about towing only, specifically granting automatically the "+E" licence.

What TobyL is referring to then would require our "B" licence moving partly into the "C" category.

I can envisage any like move on the maximum vehicle weight licences affect, bringing deep international acceptance implications.

Not exactly. pre 1997 had C1E's on their licence until age 70. This category does not extend to post 1997 licencees under the revised legislation.

I passed my test in 1996 and I can drive up to 7500kgs vehicle and a trailer up to 750kgs.

That would mean that your licence includes C1 but not C1E entitlement, which I find strange considering you passed your driving test prior to 1997.

    No prob.🙂

I feel a bit sorry for those who’ve paid for training and tests but now don’t need to take them. Still, it may mean younger folk will tow with decent sized cars rather than making do with potentially underweight/underpowered cars if they didn’t want to take the test.🤷🏻‍♂️
