Just a heads up. Had an email from Vicarious Books this evening saying their supplies of the English version of next years ACSI books are stuck in Customs and they don't know when they will be released but say they will despatch within a couple of days of their release. I don't know if deliveries from ACSI direct are impacted?

Had an email from ACSI a couple of days ago saying they’d collected next years subscription and I’d receive my camping card guide by Christmas. No mention of any delay.

Yes, I know what you mean although I don’t think I ever look at the guides given the CC App is very good. I just download the whole lot (4.5GB) so I’ve got offline access on the iPad whenever and wherever.

How can I download the app when I have not received my books or membership number?

It’s a while since I joined but I think you just download the ACSI CC App (make sure you get the right one as there are several) open a new account and then pay the appropriate fee for whatever services you want to access.

I have a rolling membership. In previous years the app has been made available once the book has arrived. What is interesting is you have an up to date app yet the campsite info for 2022 is not yet live on the ACSOI website.

At the moment my country/campsite downloads show as accessible until 31/12/2021. Now my renewal subscription has been collected at some point soon that will update to 2022.

So you do not have the 2022 details then.

Not yet, email confirming subscription renewal states “You will receive the new CampingCard ACSI guide, including the discount card, before Christmas. Your combi subscription also includes access to all the new campsite information in the handy CampingCard ACSI app. The new information will be available in the app from 1 January”.

Thanks. I was under the impression that you already had the info and could not figure out how.

We are still members but haven't used ACSI for a bit...allowable periods don't coincide with our winter 'peak' trip but we actually get a rate from the site a fraction lower than ACSI which applies at other times of the year.

we also use plenty of aires when pootling about...I guess it depends how long we will be staying and how many sites come into our itinerary this coming late summer..

Seeing BBs comment had a quick look at our intended main stay next April/May.

They have a low season offer of €20 a night so will take a look at other intended stops as it may be pointless getting ACSI.

Not going to bother this year, normally purchase via the club, but a couple of sites in Spain we used had pitches set aside for ACSI customers, next to the toilet block, there are loads of discounts on offer for 2022 and the way things are panning out they will be paying us to visit, just more bumff to cart around  laughing

I’m in danger of belonging to that school. I tend to use the ACSI app as my single guide for potential sites. I’m generally looking for 2/3 nights max and for the most part can find somewhere that’s perfect for my purposes. If I’m looking for a ‘destination’ for a longer or city stay I’ll generally research further. I’ve only ever driven into one ACSI site and straight out again at what resembled a shanty town near Valencia. I’ve been caught out a few times by not studying the pricing periods carefully.

Hi David, Your mention of camping cheques has brought me over all nostalgic!! Those heady days when we first discovered them and stayed at Bella Italia, in 2003, when a cheque was €9.80 but the offers were 7 nights for 5 and 14 for 11, so stayed three weeks and paid for just 16 nights.

From memory the best saving was around €16 a day which, as it became our favourite, was lovely bonus.

Like SB the CC, and now ACSI, guides are the first port of call but last year, when planning for the trip we didn't take, Jean said she wanted to reduce the daily travel time and just do 200 miles as opposed to the usual 300-350.

This meant more overnights and it was surprising how much more difficult this was to plan when restricting oneself to ACSI camping card sites.

I simply looked at each point roughly 200 on and did a Google search for sites and, as mentioned, often the prices were as good, or sometimes better, than ACSI-not just the camping card sites but all sites.

After two years of no van travel abroad I am now faced with having a wedding, twice postponed, to attend at the time I would usually be away so not yet certain that we will go next year.

At the moment waiting to see if our friends hoped for Spanish rallies go ahead as we will do something together if not so more research and planning to fill the days!

I bought into ACSI when I retired and whilst I agree it does not always offer the best deals, you have to do a lot of digging to get better.

Even though we now caravan out of high season I've carried on my habit of booking first and last campsites of a European break for peace of mind. Booking a long way in advance I've found the C&MC often match or just beat ACSI rates, but it is a close thing and you have to do a lot of number crunching.

Joining ACSI really is a no brainer though. Our Europe 2 trips will see us in Carnac from 26th August for 6 nights. This is on the cusp of ACSI availability and limited available pitches for what will still be high season for the Brits. Even after a greedy booking fee those 6 nights will be Euro 80 cheaper with ACSI. As I said a no brainer.

Interesting -when i organised a trip and looked at ACSI I found a better option (checking it out on google maps) than they offered, price was not the problem - more the whereabouts of the site in question.

Please don't ask - that was 10 years or so ago.

I haven't been back to them since.

I guess it depends on what your criteria is for selecting a site, but Google maps is fairly thin on information compared to information listings in the ACSI guides or app or any other site guides for that matter.

When discussing Jeans now stated preference for shorter travel days I did point out that her preference to stay at sites where we could get a meal, after a long day on the road, would no longer apply as she would have plenty of time to prepare something.......................she surprisingly did not seem to agree!!!!

Looking at a route across France to Annecy it was a surprise, in a country with so many sites, to find so many, as you say, Black Holes and I would not be surprised to find it has got worse since then.

I did, as mentioned, find it useful to look at the ACSI Eurocampings site and not just the ACSI Camping Card site.

Hi SB, I use the Google search as the first 'sort and then look at the online guides-used to frequently be looking at Archies-and prompted by BBs post thinking that, much as I like to have the ACSI to hand, is it really worth it for a, fingers crossed, trip where there is little likelihood of getting back the cost, never mind make a saving.

When the ACSI website starts to show the 2022 sites, availability and prices I will have a better idea.

Hi David, I know what you mean-but this is not one of those cases!

Things could change again, Covid related, but after having all village events cancelled for two years we want to be here for the Queens Platinum celebrations and that means that going to the wedding, which we are both looking forward to immensely, fits in very nicely.

The decision then is, do we go away early, April into May, or late, June into July and that decision is on hold till we know our friends plans-if their rallies are cancelled then we will be looking to go together.
