Site prices

But why do adult only sites put their prices up during school holidays including Christmas? Why do prices for holiday cottages for two people go up dramatically over Christmas? Both examples start their peak prices the weekend of 17th December and go on for two weeks? It would appear that is it nothing to do with having children with you or when people start their holidays?
Don't get me wrong as someone who has till recently had to pay these peak prices all my working life I share your irritation and wonder why but it's just one of those things that happen. But it is by no means just the club that does this.

Then really, with the greatest respect (and I mean that), if you just accept the prices going up you're part of the 'problem' and yes the club will keep putting prices and peak times up.
The only time prices will come down is when people stop using sites, or use them less. Now for as long as I've been on CT the idea that sooner or later prices will start to put people off has always been mentioned but so far this hasn't happened. I agree with you that deposits might be a game changer as it's unknown territory but only time will tell.

TDA wrote "It’s still the cheapest option for York, if you own an outfit."
Not according to Alan&Jeans post. £27 per night.
I haven't used a single CAMC site this year. The primary reasons are two fold. Firstly I think they are over priced. Secondly the apparent obfuscation of pricing in that the handbook does not provide a full tariff like it used to do.
Additionally, and this is a personal issue, the majority of sites are generally fairly remote with poor transport links necessitating taking the motorhome off site to actually go anywhere.

Not applicable to YRP. It has no grass pitches, they only close areas if it’s for a problem such as overhead cables. And it certainly had plenty of staff when we were there last. Flooding can and does close it however, on a yearly basis, if not more.

I am fairly sure it will be a game changer. I am sure I can’t be alone in that the T&C’s are a major factor in our decision. To me they make the prices I am accepting palatable. Particularly now we have joined the other club and find we quite like there offerings, if you remove those T&C’s …well let’s just say that I’m not going to pay £8 more a night. It will of course depend on what the T&C’s are and the ease of booking / if you can select surface type. Hopefully the CC have factored all this in and modelled potential outcomes. They could be loosing a significant proportion of there regular oldies who qualify for the age related discount.

That’s a nice alternative to Beechwood Grange. But you will need a bike, a bus, a taxi or to drive into City Centre. It’s just inside the ring road, not 400 metres away from main centre. 😁

You can always note on sites that do not have transport links, they are normally full of caravans, where as sites as here in Norfolk motor caravans are about 50/50with caravans ,and do not move off from the time they arrive to the day they leave as the bus stops are outside the site and it is about a 20 min walk into town along the coast

As someone once said ‘you can’t buck the market’, CMC rates are broadly in line with comparable commercial sites. If they were not, then demand would overwhelm and act as a disincentive to booking & membership. In that scenario prices might fall if demand fell off a cliff, but that isn’t going to happen. We’re seeing sharp price increases in just about everything this year - all part of the ‘new normal’.

City based sites like Baltic Wharf are, in my view, exceptional value.

And interestingly enough once the peak rates come into play at York Caravan park, Beechwood Grange will be cheaper, not by much but could be more as the club site will be passing on the VAT reduction which the other site doesn't give any indication that it is.
I could mention the non refundable deposits and harsher cancellation rules. The site suggest you take out holiday insurance which will drive up costs?

Cyber.........your post confirms my findings whilst on holiday in Cornwall this September. Apart from one couple, all the Campervans remained on site from arrival until departure. As the site is beautifully landscaped and the weather was unusually fabulous for Cornwall I guess it was not a problem and very enjoyable. However had the weather been unkind I am sure that it would have been more like imprisonment, confined to such small places, except for one huge Motorhome towing a Smart car .Personally I don't think there is a right or wrong way to holiday, just do what suits your needs. However the word freedom is a word which we probably would all use to describe our way of holidaying and yet that freedom of the Campervans did not seem evident to me, more like confinement on this particular site.

And that's exactly what it was chosen for-as an alternative to Beechwood-based on online reviews and appearing, as it turned out correctly, to be an attractive site with a good facility block
I think at the time it was slightly cheaper than Beechwood for two of us.
The site has a bus stop right outside the gate but we used the P&R, combining travel with a bit of shopping and dining, at Monks Cross.

Never studied holiday prices over Christmas , it is not a time we would ever consider going anywhere, we spend Christmas with our children and grand children, who live within easy travelling distance and have space for us to stay over if we wish, so, as JVB would say.......we are out of touch with prices these days.
Both our children are married to teachers so, as our daughter said recently, doomed to have to pay peak holiday prices till they retire.
Her in-laws are both retired teachers, used to going away only in the school holidays, but strangely, even now they still go away at the same times.
We are certainly voting with our wheels and using far fewer CAMC and full facility sites than we used to. With only the 2 of us in the van most of the time, we do not really need site facilities, we would much rather use a CL with serviced pitches. We did use a few CAMC sites this year as we had left it too late to find alternatives in popular areas, but we did not use other than the toilet facilities on a couple of sites, so really no point in paying for facilities we will not use.
For us, deposits, especially if non refundable, will certainly change things. The ease of booking or amending and lack of deposit is the CAMC unique selling point as far as we are concerned, and something we have in the past been willing to pay a little extra for. If that goes then we might as well book CCC sites, which are considerably less expensive for us, or up our CL ceiling price.
With inflation increasing, price rises all round, something has to give.

I wouldn’t say that’s typical, plenty of folks, particularly PVC owners take their van out for day trips, we certainly do but would research the parking options first. We’re all different, I frequently observe caravan folks just sat in or by their awnings all day long, isn’t that just another type of confinement? Obviously one they enjoy - freedom means we can chose whatever suits us best.
