As you probably know our daughter lives there. She finds our 'lockdown' laughable, no clear rules! When she 1st learnt about it her girls, 6 and 4, had to cross their arms and have hands on their shoulders for the duration of a shop visit if they were with her. Sanitised their hands before and after visit.......... They had their cul de sac Christmas party, lovely photo of all the children in the street sitting in the kerb - my 1st reaction they're all too close! So conditioned have I become.

I admire the NZ PM, a couple of slip ups early on, letting out 2 women (Brits 😱) to drive to Wellington from Auckland on compassionate grounds, they broke the rules re stopping and mixing, both had COVID19 when tested, and spread it. Result NO ONE LEAVES ON COMPASSIONATE GROUNDS. Stuck too! A few escapees for alcohol and cigarettes,  delivery now sorted, but rest of your quarantine spent in prison. NZ taxpayer's no longer pick up the bill for quarantine the person entering does. Expats trying to get home complaining no spaces in mandatory isolation quarantine (MIQ) until April and May now. Straight off the plane by coach to MIQ until release from the get go. Only cases they have are in MIQ. A friend our ours said, there was a native went to give evidence in court in daughter's city with COVID symptoms, yes they have bright ones there too!, luckily tested negative but shows how easy it could get out again......... There has been talk of opening air bridges but they've not opened because other places not completely free. Seems very sensible to me. I loved they way she stated at the beginning we have a moat and we will use it! If only we had one too......

Our friends, UK folk who've been out there 20 years incredulous that  any one can arrive nhere no tests etc etc.....

Yes they have a small population but the rules were clearly laid out and enforced. Lockdown started a week before us in March and was over, save a blip when Auckland had a community outbreak source never completely traced. Auckland complete lockdown and rest of the county a lower level of lockdown for 2 weeks, and life back to completely normal in June. I think granddaughter missed 6 weeks max at school.  They are ever vigilant and will need the vaccine at some point if they allow visitors back in.

Incidently daughter was saying so many not doing their OE, overseas experience, and no foreign holidays trying to book a holiday very hard 🤣

Money certainly seems to talk in one country at least when acquiring a vaccine. The UAE have vaccinated roughly 8% of their population but they seem to have sufficient vaccines to inoculate one of their professional sports teams.

"Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar has taken part in the first "collective vaccination" against Covid-19 in sport, say his UAE Team Emirates outfit.

The team took a newly approved vaccine trialled in the United Arab Emirates. "

Wonder when our Premier League teams will follow suit?undecided

Can’t imagine that any country wouldn’t order vaccine unless it wants to spent the future in complete isolation from the rest of the world.

As far as NZ is concerned, we might admire them but they have some huge factors on their side e.g, relatively small population, sparsely distributed on a remote island. Guernsey have achieved the same for exactly the same reasons.

You're right no country wouldn't. That is not my point though.

I was referring that (as NTH said) they have ordered enough for 2 times the population. Being Covid free they do not have, or need to have rather, the urgency that other countries perhaps have? Just my initial thoughts on them ordering 2x.

As I said their PM or someone made a good decision.

Just as a point of reference, the UK gov has orders for 350m doses, including vaccines that are still in development.

Maybe we are going to gift some to developing countries, above & beyond our commitment to WHO👍🏻

Well we will have plenty to spare, my daughter was contacted at 1700 hrs yesterday by Queen Alexander hospital Portsmouth asking her if she would like to attend to receive a covid-19 vaccine, apparently they had lots of spare vaccine because people had not turned up for their appointments yell

That would be a more sensible policy than gifting to countries with a space programme!

I doubt India will need gifts of vaccines they are producing both their own & a lot of the Worlds vaccines, they’re a developing Country tipped to be the new China👍🏻

I'm pleased for her but like you I find people not attending for their appointments (can't all be honest mistakes) very frustrating.

They may not care for the owns lives but it's the damage they can do to others.

I’d be careful before judging those who didn’t turn up. Given the rate of infection down there, it’s not impossible that some might already have died, are in hospital or (given that it’s the elderly being vaccinated) maybe those who were to accompany them, or drive their taxi there, were too ill.

No excuse for not trying to contact vaccination centre, but we don’t know the full facts, maybe quite a few no shows had a valid reason for not being there.

5% of folks regularly fail to attend their GP appointment - factor that up on the scale of the vax programme!  So, maybe not unexpected and best anticipated in the planning (maybe it is)?

If they were like our elderly neighbour who got the call for a jab but was totally flustered about getting to the vaccination site in a place she didn't know eight miles away in a town she doesn't visit you can imagine the problems of take up. She turned down the offer after the first failed attempt to find transport and the caller could maybe have given her some helpful options. Had we or other locals known we would have helped. We've now geared her up for the next invite, if she gets one?

No I don't agree, I assume they were contacted by phone, and not a letter that could have got lost, and agreed to the appointment?

Yes I agree some could have some mishap to stop them attending but as there so so many missed appointments then something else is up. There have been far too many post from different posters saying this is happening. Sorry but some are not treating this seriously.

I don't think I will need hope that I will attend every important appointment, I know I will. I always have.

Also as these people are the most vulnerable I would have thought they would have made every attempt to attend. Things do happen but not in the numbers that are being presented, IMHO of course.

I agree there is not many excuses for not just advising a non attendance, but that is many it seems in todays society,

I was watching saving lives at sea last week when a lifeboat was launched after a kite surfer was reported being blown out to sea, they spent over five hours searching for him when they found the kite but no one in the harness ,only to be advised he was at home after losing itat sea  but did not give a thought to advise the coast guardyell

If  arrived at the back of the queue that you refer to David I might well be a no show! Very poor planning and totally unnecessary. Why subject anybody to standing outside in winter for hours, let alone somebody of senior years.

At the start of the first lockdown there were a large number of volunteers? To help with shopping for example I recall? Has this now gone?

If certain people are having difficulty getting to an appointment or have need of transport this would be a perfect use for them?

I understand when reading later reports it was the first day at this centre ,and they had completely underestimated the staffing levels which have since been increased,  also as per appointments at most places in these times,  you are asked to arrive not more than five minutes before appointment time

I suspect that those helping out individuals would have still had contacts. My OH was closing and locking the front gates when a young lady that she had spoken to before when the lady was looking for a cat.

During the conversation she asked if we needed help with shopping o anything and left a contact number that we were asked to pass to anybody that needed such help.

I think it was about the very elderly JV, I doubt many 80yr olds are kite surfing, had you misread it maybe?

Proves nothing about ‘today’s society’, it’s just one irresponsible individual amongst many others who behave entirely responsibly. Always have been people like that even in the rose tinted, halcyon days of yesteryear, always will be.

I think a lot of community support arrangements created in March have simply reactivated, that’s certainly the case where I live. Frankly, I don’t think the mass national volunteer programme was much of a match for locally coordinated and resourced support.

I would have expected that it was a first day but little excuse really and especially as it is a situation already experienced elsewhere.

I think you need to note what happens these days,to note how so many people "do not see or try to ignore others in distress" and do not want to get involved, with any problems they might encounter,
