Newbie motorhome looking for breakdown cover

Just bought a 2019 Bessacarr & although it’s still covered by Fiat Assistance the dealer recommended I take out breakdown cover. Can anyone recommend a good firm - and one’s to avoid? It would be for UK cover, I’m assuming it will be cheaper to buy European cover for occasional trips as and when required. Thank you.

There are many threads on this subject and there's a current one here -

A lot of people opt for this club's Mayday (Green Flag) or the other club's RAC Arrival. Others are available. The important thing is to make sure the policy covers a vehicle of the dimensions and weight of your van and that you get the level of cover that suits you.

My wife’s car had standard cover from Mayday by Green Flag (CAMC)
for £103 pa, so I upgraded that cover to Premium which now also covers my Kon-tiki in the UK and last year we paid £134.    It is due again in Nov 20.    I checked with Green Flag before doing so about size and weight and it was OK.

We always use CAMC Red Pennant for all travel abroad.

I insured my Mileo 243 through Comfort Insurance (Aviva) & whilst they offer breakdown cover I opted out due to Fiat Assistance which is valid for 2 years.... no point paying twice for the same thing!

Good point, Kasspa. We dropped our RAC cover because we're at the start of our Camper Assist cover with Fiat. It’s worth reading about the cover Fiat give.

Thanks for these replies, very helpful. Think I’ll stick with Fiat Assistance until it runs out, though need to check what it covers eg changing a wheel after a puncture.

It’s enough cover for our needs. It'll bear checking but I think we've got Fiat Camper Assist for 3 years.

Yes TW, I'm sure it says in handbook UK based vehicles get the 3 years & cover was quite comprehensive iirc, however as most things these days you need a lawyer to interpret all the small print wink

I have the CMC's Green Flag cover for our towcar/caravan and today enquired if that cover would include a motorhome we intend to buy in the next few weeks. I'm pleased to say it does with no extra premium. We have had one occasion recently to use our Green Flag cover and the service was excellent.

If you have a motorhome it might be worth having Personal Cover with Mayday.  Personal Cover covers the person, so if you are in the MH, it should cover the MH.... if you also have a car, you will be covered in the car.  If you are a passenger in someone else's car, that car is covered.

Just wondering.....  If the car breaks down when you are towing a caravan, the caravan is also recovered.  I would assume that, if you have a MH and tow a car, that the car would be recovered if the MH breaks down.... it just may be worth checking..

Like others, we've always had excellent service from Mayday.
