Last Minute Cancellation

We booked a 5 night stay at a CL. All packed up an ready to go, when the weather dramatically changed to gale force winds very heavy rain and some foggy patches. After much deliberation we decided to cancel our trip as the forecast was the same for the duration. My question is should we pay for the time booked, or agree to visit in the very near future? The site manager said we did not need to pay them and that all their bookings had been cancelled. We really feel bad about this as it is their living. What should we do?

Many years ago we were in your situation(,not weather related)the owners would not accept any payment for our stay ,but we sent them a cheque for half the fee, we then recieved an Interflora bunch of flowers in return, laughing the  CL we used is now closed they retired and  they are no longer alivefrown

Personally I'd offer something but at the very least I'd rebook for when the weather is kinder, its obviously somewhere you wanted to visit.

Seems like not travelling and then staying is a very sensible decision yourself by other users or the CL owner depending on who cancelled their bookings.

    Stay safe.

Is cancelling a CL any different from cancelling a restaurant booking, an MOT test, a hairdresser or a dental appointment?  Would you offer to pay any of those others? Just phone and explain and rearrange the date .

I'm honouring my booking, just waiting for the worst of the wind to blow over but it will be a wet weekend. I was torn on whether to cancel but considered it too unfair on the CL oiwner without offering to pay for the stay. If you are going to pay for the stay, you might as well go and make the most of it. There is no such thing as bad weather only poor clothing. I hope to at least get some walking done and to see friends.

If you feel it's safe to travel and you'll be happy on site I agree with you  - go ahead. I agree about the right clothes but in this instance I think it's more about being safe to tow or drive a high sided vehicle.

    Enjoy your trip.

"There is no such thing as bad weather only poor clothing."

This is a generalisation/cliche and not always true. It is certainly not relevant to considering whether or not to tow in gale force winds. Personally, I don't think there is anything to consider in such conditions. Why would anyone even think of doing so? As you posted, you will wait for the worst of the wind to blow over.

Thank you for your responses. I think I should explain that we had a major incident a few years ago resulting in the caravan becoming adrift and colliding with a car. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it is not something easily forgotten by both of us. So being in our mid seventies we err on the side of caution. We will at the earliest opportunity re-book, and think of a token gift as they have turned down payment. Finally, before someone suggests we should give up caravanning you should know we tour a lot throughout Britain and France each year.

Sensible precaution Mr H, I'm sure in addition to your future booking they will appreciate your token gift 👍

Silly Me embarassed, once when walking 'Striding Edge' perhaps I should have put on thicker socks to help keep me upright against the crosswinds.

Why should anyone suggest you give up caravanning? A lot of us are in your age range and still going strong.

A three hour drive and I am on site with 4 other motorhomes and a  caravan. Yes the drive was wet but certainly not windy and we arrived in the dry and it continues to be so. There is just a gentle breeze and I'm off for a walk when I have finished my cuppa.

Out of interest the recent CL we used sent us an e mail which ended "you will turn up won't you, we've had a lot of cancellations." We enjoyed our stay there and had we not "turned up" I would have offered a payment in lieu. I think it's kind to offer something even if it's rejected.

Hope you enjoy your next CL visit Mr H. smile

You obviously didn't venture down this way, PD. Wind speeds were in the 40s/50s for a good part of the day.

Must be quieter where you are as it has been quite windy and has broken a huge branch off one of the ancient  (1770) sweet chestnut trees at the bottom of our road blocking one of the footpaths into one of our woodlands

According tothis evening's local news there were gusts of 60m.p.h. in the morning but as you say by the time I arrived on site in the early afternoon it was a gentel breeze. The sun even came out very briefly while on my walk.

laughing  As the crow flies I am about 25 miles from the Solent. This morning it is raining hard but next to no wind and it is expected to clear away by noon. If H was worried about the wind, he could have simply postponed his trip by 24/36 hours rather than cancel it all.

At the age of H and others , us included ,we also would have cancelled ,when going away it is more of a check "appointments/medications" to see what time there is before any of them are needed,

If a journey entails more than about 130 miles an overnight is normally booked, before the final part to our destination so a 24/36 hour, delay would make a week ?away not viable for us

Have they moved Bedfordshire then? 25 miles north of the Solent will get you to Andover/Basingstoke and that's still in Hampshire when I last looked. Trust me, It's been honking down here.

What has age got to do with it JVB? You are either fit to drive or you are not. Some of us have regular medicals and eye checks to ensure this is so.

This is the first time I have ever cancelled and hence why I sort how to respond. Today the area I was going to has an amber weather warning as follows:-

Heavy rain is expected to bring some flooding and transport disruption.

    - Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings

    - Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life

    - Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely

    - Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

    - A good chance some communities cut off by flooded roads

So Peedee I am glad you are in a good Place and enjoy yourself.

+1, the same detractors would attack those who throw caution to the wind & set out to either have a mishap or create issues for others🤷🏻‍♂️

Full +1 to you and Mr H

As we were once told: believe me from personal experience it's far better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.

I was just trying to put another perspective on why at our age a reason as you post why it would not be feasible to delay trip by 24/36 hrs
