I don't keep checking. I suspect that it is mainly weekenders that do most of the checking - check once and go elsewhere. No idea how full the sites are this August compared to others. September looks busier than normal years though.

I like the idea that was mentioned some pages ago of booking months ahead the weekdays for two weeks on the selected site, and then booking the intervening weekend when it becomes available on the wednesday.

All good and well, but what does one do, miles from home, and with all sites around now full for that weekend when nothing comes available on the Wednesday . . . . ?

I think that there's every chance that one could find a CL or even a commercial site close by that still has pitches available for the intervening weekend. It's just a matter of looking and being patient.

Given the speed this web site is working at this evening, it would be difficult to search for and make a booking, even if space is available.☹️ I think many would give up in despair and try elsewhere.

With all the moans about availability of pitches, members' ignoring covid guidelines in the use of wrist bands at toilet blocks, speeding vehicles and kids on bikes and the persistant risks of catching covid-19 anywhere, I just can't understand why anyone would want to go away during the rest of 2020.

These really are unprecedented times so be thankful you're still safe and stay at home.

Life goes on, this situation could go on for some time. Personally a year or longer stuck at home would do my head in. We’ve been to several sites, but none of them CMC. However, chose your locations carefully, use your own facilities, take appropriate precautions and the risk is very small. In the absence of a vaccine we’re learning to live with CV19, not putting life on hold.

I’d go as far as saying that as Cornwall residents we’re probably safer being away than being at home in peak season!

Cheer up look what you will be missing

But in Spain in particular the virus is now returning rapidly, with 8,000 new infections reported on Friday alone.laughing

We know, you keep reminding us everyday.

There are worse things at present David. You have your health, no loved ones ill, you have the money to go away sometime in the future. All in all count your self lucky, as TomL says above.

Re : children enjoying themselves on bikes

Just as an aside we recently spent a few days on a C&CC site and every evening children of all ages, and a few adults, spent an hour or so riding around the site until their bedtime. It was a joy to watch and a pleasure to see them having fun whilst we sat outside.

I have been a club member for over 25 years, and one of the main enjoyments of using the club sites was the flexibility of touring

well it's been 21 for me and even way back then one had to book for sites at certain times especially over the school holidays and weekends from May to September.

The only thing that has changed now is how this now 'must book' period now extends to most of the season and the lead time for bookings has got bigger. In the past a few weeks was enough now perhaps a few months.

I agree with TW, it is just that caravaning and MH has just got so very popular. 'a victim of its own success'

As I have mentioned before, I consider any booking a year ahead (which we do) speculative. Although we have the firm intention of honouring them, who knows what could get in the way in the next 12 months.

So in this respect the new style year ahead booking system, almost certainly increases the number of cancellations. The old December frenzy day meant you couldn't book Easter until 3 / 4 months before, or your August holidays until 8 months before. Where as now you can book before, or soon after you have taken them.

Yes, far worse things to contend with on some sites. However, I notice ‘riding’ has now moved on from anything to do with pedals, it’s all electric scooters these days. No wonder some folks are getting a bit lardy.

It’s all about compromise, choosing carefully, balancing your own personal risk factors. The sooner folks realise this, and everyone works towards the “new normal”, then hopefully everyone gets a chance to enjoy a bit of something. Might take a mindset change in terms of how and when to book a holiday, might mean compromising on where you choose to go. Lots of holiday companies are being very flexible at the moment, deferring dates if there’s another big surge in cases, some offering a full refund, cottages doing seriously deep cleaning in between stays, some campsites open but without facilities. Opportunities are there for most folks, individuals weigh up their options. What to do when away also needs compromise. 🤷‍♀️

East Anglia doesn't incur any border crossings, David, and the weather is usually good in Sept. 👍

Is Scandinavia not part of mainland Europe? undecided (I was neglecting Iceland of course!)

Well you haven't been sufficiently flexible to get a holiday unfortunately - but there are still plenty of places ... er ... in the UK you know! wink

Italy is cancelled because the company who were organising the walking tour ended up with insufficient numbers (of course we'd have been flying there,  not driving) - disappointing since we'd have been more than happy to go, but, as said, we've found an alternative - Italy will still be there in 2021 and beyond. smile

I don't think that is relevant to David wishing to go to Europe across the Channel.

Maybe like me he is happy to be less flexible.

Well if one is happy to be less flexible there is little justification for reminding everyone of the fact that one can't get to where one wants to go, I'd say. One just has to grin and bear it! wink

I see that Southlands IOW has standard pitch with awning available during Sept, I think you might even get a cheap ferry deal with the booking ?

But our weather probably won't be so good in Autumn as East Anglia's. That's where I'd head if I desperately wanted to get away.

that is very good value, over £100 just for car and 4 people normally. I used it a couple of years back, really nice site, bit remote, can almost see IOW from home, not over the last couple of days sea to rough, but swam this morning all good, nearly as warm as the Medlaughing.
