Am picking up our new van in a couple of weeks and looking at most suitable towing mirrors for a 8ft wide van. I see the Milenco Grand aero has two options; standard (31cm bar length) and extra wide (41cm bar length)?

Our tow car is a Honda CRV which is approx 2 mtrs between mirror centres; I was wondering if anyone has experience of choosing a wing mirror for the wider van and could make some suggestions/preferences?

I have been using the long bars on my grand aeros with a 7'7" caravan, gives a really good view down the side of the van and allows you to spread the clamps as far apart as possible for stability.

You can always cut the long bars down if needs be.

The Milenco clamps that attach the bar to the door mirror allow the bar to be adjusted inwards to give the optimal rear view rather than cutting them.

My van is 8' wide and I have Grand Aeros from ages ago.  I found that I needed the extra long extension arms when I got the new van - from memory I think they were about £10.  I find that whilst the nearside one has to be fully extended for a good view, the offside one doesn't - which is good for not having it protruding to far and getting knocked off.  It just slides in or out on the clamps - no need to cut anything.

The other thing I have done - from bitter experience when white van man managed to hit the offside one whilst towing our last van  - is put 'Dayglo' yellow tape on the back of the mirror to make it very obvious - and it does work.  Oncoming drivers can be seen to pull over the their left to give it a wide berth!
