SORN'ed your van in March, check your DD

Back in early March I entered into a new direct debit agreement with the DVLA for the continuation of the VED as of the 1st April, at the time any kind of Covid 19 isolation policy and the closing of all caravan and camping sites hadn't even been thought of.

Then on knowing that all sites were being instructed to close as well as of course HM Governments isolation policy I decided to put my van onto SORN and was duly in receipt of confirmation........... job done, I thought foolishly!!

Then this morning my most beloved (who looks after all of our banking transactions) announced "the xyz DVLA have only taken the April VED payment, I thought she is on SORN"..... so after my boiling kettle of a brain had calmed down slightly I made several attempts to make phone contact with the darned organisation, all without success, so I then started to look into finding an email address which I found to be like trying to find the proverbial needle in the hay stack!

I now know that other motorhome owners on another forum who had also placed their vans on SORN in late March have also had their April direct debits withdrawn from their banks.

As this is the case and if you placed your van on SORN in March, then it might be worth your while checking with your bank if a payment has been taken

Cancel the DD yourself then they can’t take more.

Also, speak to your bank as the DD Guarantee should see you right.

Have you checked whether they need so many working days to action a SORN? Might be worth looking at the web page and any T&C's. If there are it might explain the overlap if cancelled late in the preceding month.

Is this a yearly DD or a monthly DD?

I had something similar with a DD for my optician loyalty scheme recently.

The only way to be certain is to cancel the DD yourself, some can be done online but I couldn't do Santander that way. It was a misunderstanding on the opticians paperwork, to ensure I didn't loose the benefits when I reduced family members on the scheme 😉. They stopped the DD until we were square. I don't suppose it will be so easy with DVLA 😯

    We've SORNed our towcar.

Done online & it was instantaneous. We got an email confirmation within seconds.

Quick phone call to the bank & Direct Debit cancelled.

DD's and standing orders stop on the next due date according to my online banking. It comes up as a warning on nationwide before you cancel prematurely 😯. In fact I think it ceases at midnight on the day you cancel, but I wouldn't swear to it.

Both myself and others I know of were all paying by monthly DD.

From my experience SORNing just like when you pay for a new period of VED is instant.

I/we received confirmation of the fact that our vans were on SORN.

If you SORN a vehicle do you have to inform your insurance?

I SORNed my van at the end of December as I was going to New Zealand in January and February.

it was obviously too late to stop the direct debit being taken out at the beginning of January. No sweat, I had a refund back in my account by the 13th.
