Refunds on crossings?

We booked through the CC to go in May with Brittany Ferries, and they have just taken the balance of payment.

How do we stand financially if the ferry is cancelled?

I would like to get a refund as I think this will go on longer than we envisage, and also, if any ferry companies cease trading, then a voucher to travel at a later date would be worthless.

Have you read the Clubs posting on this regarding bookings of ferries etc, including how, when and in what date order they will get in touch.

Dr Nigel,  if you booked directly with Brittany Ferries they will get in touch with you nearer your travel date. In tne first instance they will offer you a voucher for future travel to protect their own cash flow crisis, but with a little gentle persuasion will give you a refund instead.

But perhaps you booked with this Club, in which case Metheven's earlier post will apply.

Am a club voyage member with Brittany Ferries, and were to depart to France in May, with or final payment yesterday the 17th. They advised to re schedule until October, and when next years details are published, July/August, to re schedule again for next year. Brilliant as far as we are concerned. With this advise we would not loose our deposit if we cancelled, and also delays final payment, and encourages us to travel next year.

AD - Can I ask, is the voucher for a 'Portsmouth to Bilbao' crossing, or is it a voucher of a specific value in pounds?

We've a car only ferry booked with Irish ferries for June. They will allow a free transfer of dates (but we have no idea if/when we will be able to travel) but a cancellation is going to cost me 25% of the fare, which is £135 I was taking my father in law back to Ireland on a bit of a pilgrimage - he is 93 years old. Irish Ferries will not allow the 25% cancellation fee to go towards a future booking quoting Terms and Conditions of booking.

    Hi,

We have ferries booked for July {Dover Calais} and and again for August {Dover Calais} with DFDS but through The Club, when I enquired re situation was told the July one could be deferred until early Jan 2021 and the August one until mid Jan 2021.

We have no news about July campsite as yet but the August/Sept campsite is presently closed until further notice.

I am booked May 2nd on BF route Portsmouth-Caen via CAMC.

As the sailing is currently still planned to go, the club say cancellation would cost £41.25 (25%), and this will increase if cancelled after 4th April.

I can transfer free to a later sailing date, but currently, who knows what that date needs to be in the present debacle.

    Stop-Press

Just had a phone call from the club to say email I received was not correct.

Full refund back to payment card possible and accepted!

Just need the Red Pennant sorting now, which I was told by same gentleman, that a full refund should be given on that also.

Trying to get in touch with Brittany ferries to sort our booking for April 15th. Had an email from them saying that all their phones lines have been stopped so that staff can concentrate on the online service.

We had to make 2 separate bookings, direct with BF due to their change of booking tariffs. Each of them has different T&C's so not sure what they are going to offer us, according to their info page if we cancel the April ferry we will lose 100% of the cost surprised ouch! that was to Bilbao. The return ferry isn't until Mid June but under the new booking tariffs and I booked Flexi so that isn't so bad only 25% of the booking will be lost if we cancel. However if we change the bookings online then there is no charge. Only problem is if we are allowed to go out in September, we wouldn't go to Bilbao but to St Malo or Roscoff and return through Caen. This would mean that the fares would be considerably less than our current booking so don't know if BF would give us a credit voucher or not for the difference. Have sent them a request form with all the details so awaiting a response.

Of course if 'they' cancel the sailing on the 15th April we would get a full refund.

watching the news tonight where deaths in Spain have risen by 1/3 in the last 24 hours and they are now 3rd in the world table of coronavirus infections, I would place my money on a full refund, good luck

sorry i would double check this , i think they are giving vouchers to the value of whatever, rather than giving a refund, read it somewhere and may have posted on here somewhere undecided

Hi Rufs, would be okay with vouchers as we will be going back at some stage. What I don't want to do is change the booking taking a guess at when we can next travel and then have to keep changing it. Full refund would be best, not sure if that's what BF want though. Oh well they will get round to replying when they can it must be manic for them just now trying to get everyone back.

Lager wine - saw your original post saying you were booked on May 2nd sailing for Portsmouth-Caen, and had contact from Club.

Interesting as we are booked May 1st (albeit Portsmouth-Bilbao), and haven’t yet been contacted by Club.

One might have thought they were contacting in sailing date order?

I’m not unduly concerned as trusting they will get round to it. We’re still well over a month away, and the statement on this website suggests the outcome will be ok. In any case, whilst one doesn’t want to be out of pocket, this is hardly a major concern in this crisis.

IanTG - Just to clarify the sequence of vents -

I emailed club asking what my options were( booking was ferry+sites leaving UK May 2nd)

Response received by email gave options (and cost penalty)

I responded asking for more clarity, as they said the date I cancelled affected the penalty charge.

Then received the phone call saying email incorrect, offering refund which I accepted.

Important - during the call, it became clear that cancellation after 2nd April (30 days), there would be a ferry charge, so I would contact them rather than waiting for a call.

Lagerwine, that makes it sound like you triggered the cancellation  whilst the ferry technically was still sailing? (noting the comment about ‘the date I cancelled’)

Or was that the ‘incorrect’ bit?

I will try to contact Club but I am thinking if it is BF who cancel, due to govt restrictions on travel, then either a refund (preferable) or a voucher for future use (but when?) will apply.

IanTG, as the call came out of the blue, I wasn't prepared. Not sure whether it will be classed as a cancellation by me, but the caller certainly offered a full refund to the original  payment card. Hopefully it all works as I described, as I have no record of the conversation, and he said it would take up to 10 days, so cant confirm yet, one way or the other

    Thanks lagerwine.

at the moment, I’m respecting the clubs statement, and waiting to be contacted. It seems clear the club itself is waiving all amendment and cancellation fees, and they are hoping that BF will do similar.

I can’t imagine anyone is hopeful that the current travel restrictions could avoid being extended, especially (on current infection numbers) entry into Spain. So, pretty sure BF will end up cancelling our booked ferry, which should provide for better options for refunds/future bookings.

I booked a saver fare direct with P&O but they have agreed to carry over the payment against a future sailing up to a year after the original date. Still hoping that I may be able to salvage something in the early autumn.

Thanks for the information. Am waiting for information on our DFDS and P&O Dover Calais in May and our DFDS Harwich Hook in June. Will just have to see what happens when the club phones up. Take care everyone

Hi IanTG, we had a booking with BF direct through them for Mid April, in fact it was the date they were originally hoping to resume ferries.

We had an email from them yesterday to say that the ferry had been cancelled and a voucher to the full amount had been attached below.

The voucher is valid for 2 years, if any other bookings were in the system they would deal with them as they approach the date of sailing (or words to that effect)

We do have one for mid June but its on the flexi deal so we are just going to amend the date online (no charge) and keep moving it until we are allowed to sail.

I have just cancelled my Tunnel crossing for May.  I used Tesco Vouchers for the original booking.  Eurotunnel have given me a code to use against a future booking so long as I make the booking before 26 Mar 2021.  I would have to pay any difference should the crossing be more expensive.
