Hi, there apears to be very lttle sites for caravans open this time of year (and all winter) except aires for motorhomes! We are traveling from Cherbourg arriving about 14.15 next week and then to Carrefour to get a French gas bottle. So we will not get far after this before the overnight stop on the way down to Aquataine. Any recomendations without going out of our way?

We have found the following municiple sites

Les Mielles Suttainville who have replied and just said turn up. They are however on the west coast and not the best route.

Coutances which have not replied but supposed to be open and on the right road.

Thanks. any advice appreciated.

There is a cl type site about 60 miles from Cherbourg called www.larougerie.co.uk run by an English couple and open all year and we have good reports from this site although we have not stayed there ourselves. You could look at ukcampsites co.uk as the site has a foreign site section. Hope this helps you find a site.

Thanks, they do not have any caravan pitches available, just tent sites. Ukcampsites also do not have anywhere. Most places do not open until April for Easter.

like many others, we do the 'western route' from Cherbourg (or Caen) each winter, albeit in a MH..

notwithstanding the diversion to Carrefour (20 mins?) you should be able to make Camping Nantes that evening...

from there, i would get to Irun the next day and as you're not going anywhere near as far as that, you should probably be able to reach your   destination site the following evening...

It's about 2 hours from Cherbourg to St Martin des Besaces (camping Sous les etoiles Normandie) and about 3 hours to Rennes (Camping les Gayeulles ) - both open all year.

    Hi,

    For what its worth .....

We travel (towing our Caravan) through France in Winter en route to and from Spain. We use Le Tunnel (Terriers x2).

Am always a little disappointed by ongoing claims and worries of little or no winter sites in many areas (very true via the CMC feeble listing)  and or if only you had a M/H you could use Aires.

A very very quick map search on UK Campsites (use open all year filter & map search it with the mileage radius set high) as a starter came up with quite a few options south of Cherbourg and beyond. Assume you have rung and spoken to Larougerie ?.

ACSI will have other options. Enjoy researching & trip.

    Await critic ....

    M

Archies camping app is also very good for finding winter sites.

We have a slight advantage of owning a French hovel [just started Year 10 of what I confidently predicted would be a 6 months project ...]. This enables us to start the journey to Spain in the Vendee and make our first stop at Camping Beau Soleil at Gradignan, Bordeaux [177 miles from the hovel]. Next stop is Camping Larouletta in Urrugne [124 miles] then Zaragoza Municipal [183 miles] and finally Moncofa [187 miles].

Towing our arthritic caravan gently, we spend 5 to 6 hours each day, including a couple of stops, so it's all very genteel pace and a leisurely set up/pack down i.e. fairly chaotic but combined with checking the towhitch and that the handbrake has been disengaged at least 3 times. That's what OCD does to you!

Having now  travelled and camped we used the municiple campsite Les Vignettes in Coutances. Next to the municiple sports fields/children play area and walking for dogs from the site.Site was big enough not to unhitch for overnight:)

13.65 euros for the night and an extra 3.85 if you wanted electric.

Office hours are limited in Winter, but we were lucky someone was there at 17.00. You will have to telephone otherwise as a locked entrance gate.

Note in the photo that whilst it appears muddy you are on "plastic grid" hardstanding so no problems.

Back home thanks. Just wanted to close off the post we made before going for others in the future. I think we ended up taking the caravan on a 11 road trip to prove it trailed well!
