Hi fellow campers, I am looking for help and advice regarding sites in France and Spain that are particularly suitable for dogs.We are looking for sites that are near dog friendly beaches or rivers so we can exercise them. Also areas that we can walk with them. Open to suggestions, thanks in advance.

    Hi Pierre

Torre le Sal 2 at Oropesa (Just north of Valencia). Direct access to doggie beach, off the lead (and a bar on the beach). Site has 2 pools, 2 restaurants, doggie parlour on your  way from the beach to wash and dry the dog. Can also walk along the beach to the town with dog on lead.

Very few beaches in France and Spain allow dogs.

    Paul

I understand from dog owning friends that Vinaros has opened up a couple of dog friendly beaches. You'll find Vinaros in Castellon region near the Ebra Delta. There is a campsite at Vinaros, called Camping Vinaros. We stayed many years ago so couldn't pass any comment on current state of play. There was a nice walk from the site along a long promenade into town.

    For Catalonia try the following,

As for France ...we stayed at Camping Beausoleil in 2018  - an unmemorable site, but well placed close to shops and bars in the centre of La Palmyre village. We met two very pleasant English couples who live in France. They said they came there because they can take their dogs through the pine forest to the isolated parts of the Cote Sauvage beach - far from the watchful eyes of lifeguards with whistles. In fact there must be similar stretches of isolated beach without lifeguards all the way from there to Spain, but I don't the campsites down there.

Yes, the dog beach is between Camping Alegria just outside Benicarlo, and Vinaross. We walked across it about 3 weeks ago as part of our 'Vinaross Return trip' walk from the site. Alegria also accepts dogs [we seemed to be the only people 'sans pooch' tongue-out]

Be aware of leishmaniasis in dogs (equivalent of dog AIDS). Having lived in Spain it is very common and all the local vets used to have large posters up about it.

The highest risk is at night from sand fly on the beaches so keep your dog in. Living 13km inland from Malaga in a valley with only goats we never had a problem in 14 years.

It is not just Spain but lots of Europe so everyone should be careful.

I think one simple test was pressing on a dogs gums and they stayed pale.

UK vets provide an injection against Leishmania, our dog has had this every year whilst we have been touring in Europelaughing prossesional caterpillar is also a concern this time of year particularly in Spain, no active deterent avoid areas where fir type trees are growing.

Also wearing a scalibor( or similar) collar prevents the sand flies biting. Be aware though that it is not just on the beaches. Sand flies live in moist soil, and are prevalent on many sites who have irrigation systems.

Out dog had a bad reaction to the vaccination so we now rely on the collar.

It is the whole of the mediterranean basin.
