Lake garda
Hi
We are hoping to visit lake garda for a fortnight in August and we would like to make several stops off for a few nights each way to break the journey up. However I am not too sure where to stop. We love sightseeing and visiting lots of different places. We usually visit Spain and stop several times-throughout france. I can’t decide which route to take so was after any advice you could give us.

My choice would be via Belgium, perhaps stopping off at Brugges, Camping Memling, then to Luxembourg, Camping Grit, cross into Germany and use the autobahns to Fussen, down the Fern Pass, to Innsbruck, Camping Nattersee and finally up the Brenner Pass to Lake Garda. Can not help very much with Germany campsites as with a motorhome I tend to use the Stellplatz.
In August I would advance book all the sites.

Suggest you look at the “Calais to Milan” thread below. The various options are discussed there. We did Garda many times and always went via Alsace and Switzerland (Calais, Reims, Strasbourg or Nancy, Basel, Lugano and around Milan). It’s fast but not the cheapest.

Hello Emma, the last time we went to Lake Garda we stopped at Luxembourg, Nancy, Colmar, Lake Constance, Bregenz, and Malles Venosta in the SudTirol - more than a single night at each - and that journey took nearly a fortnight.
It was August and when we got to Lake Garda we were at a campsite which was too busy and too crowded to be enjoyable - the whole area was rammed - so we stayed a very short time, went into Verona to the open air opera in the arena, and then drove down into Tuscany and started exploring.
Everyone else who posts on here seems to love Lake Garda and be magnetically drawn to it. I prefer the rest of Italy.

Hi
Thanks for all your responses I definitely have some things to look into now. We have two weeks already booked in lake garda and over 9 days extra to add onto travelling and stopping off etc.

If you decide to use the French motorway route then the municipal site at Metz is ideal for a walk into the beautiful city. Camping Christphorus between Ulm and Kempten is a handy site for an over night or even longer. It has a small lake and a good restaurant that’s good value for money.
We much prefer Camping West in Imst to the site in Natteree. A short walk from Camping West is arguably one of the best restaurants in the Tyrol. Hotel Neuner’s restaurant has a great atmosphere and superb food.
The route over the Fern Pass then the Brenner is easy with a caravan. Unfortunately it will be very very busy around Lake Garda in August, I hope this doesn’t affect your enjoyment of the area.
