Taking dogs to Europe post Brexit.

Does anyone know what, if any, changes in the requirements for travelling to and from Europe with dogs will occur at the end of the month. We have booked our ferry to Spain for early June and our Channel tunnel back from France in early July. We will be taking our two dogs, hence this request for information.

Basically if we 'Brexit' with a deal on 31st January 2020, then we have a transition period until the 31st December 2020.

Meaning this year is business as usual concerning Pet passports, no changes with requirements.

was at the vets Monday to get Rufs checked out for our 3 month trip starting April, vet said no change except he did advise to renew his Leishmania jab, apparently this no cure killer disease is becoming more prevalent in Spain.

I haven't got a dog at the moment so tend not to worry about such things but isn't the Pet Passport scheme not part of the EU after all it applies to other countries other than the EU e.g. the USA. At the very worst, surely it will only be required to be ratified as part of the transition process.

it is all still up in the air, there is a possibility that if we leave the EU with no deal on the 31st Dec 2020 then a pet passport issued in the UK will not be valid for travel within the EU so you will need to take extra precautions re rabies bloodtests/vaccinations etc. We went through all of this 2018/2019 when it looked like we would leave the EU with no deal, so to be sure Rufs had blood tests/jabs for rabies that in the event were not required but will still be valid if we leave on 31st Dec 2020 without a deal and the EU stitch us up, all very complex and costly with vets bills etc. All a nonsense in my opinion because we have always been very strict re rabies etc compared to some EU countries, and all our dogs should be chipped again this does not happen in all EU countries.

Wasn't that in the case of "no deal" Rufs? Even so the Passport wasn't invalid, you just needed to take extra precautions..

yes that was the previous bout of deal/no deal, but in theory if we do not negotiate trade deals etc within the next 11 months we could still crash out with no deal, and then nobody really knows what will be the consequencies for sure. It is not that the passport will become invalid, it is just that it will not be valid for travel in europe, so for USA and a few others it will be valid this is what the gov site says,

In the EU Pet Travel Scheme, there are 3 categorisations of third country:

    unlisted
    Part 1 listed
    Part 2 listed
Pet travel requirements will change depending on what category the UK becomes on exit day.

The UK is likely to be treated as an unlisted country under the EU Pet Travel Scheme if there’s a no-deal Brexit.

A current EU pet passport issued in the UK will not be valid for travel to the EU.

if this were to happen then you need to have blood tests done to check for rabies antibodies, if these are not sufficient then your dog has to have new jab //re-tested, and my vet told me that some dogs never develop sufficient antibodies in which case your dog will not get a certificate to travel, and of course all this testing/inoculating costs shed loads of money, Rufs passed, second time around but it was close. Very much a grey area and i am sure it will all change
