Just read on Facebook that the river next to Chatsworth is about to overflow and the wardens are evacuating. Just a heads up for anyone going for the weekend

I wonder what the situation is at York then?

I don’t think York is too bad at moment Nellie, it’s Sheffield and Hull areas getting all the rain. Has to be seen to be believed in places here, homes flooded, cars abandoned, etc..... and it’s still coming down hard. Our electric went off this morning, back on within a couple of hours, but there are a lot of roads impassable, and the rivers are very dangerous. Not sure if it’s still same, but anyone in Meadowhall Shopping Centre at teatime was told to stay there until Police gave all clear to leave. It’s bad, not yet at 2007 levels, but few hours to go yet. On the plus side......Jeep is fantastic for wading!😁

This is most up to date information I could find, it unfortunately has the Site slap in the middle of expected flood area.

We are currently at York and getting heavy showers but the river was ok when we were out earlier.

York flooding is all about what’s happening way up stream in the feeder rivers for the Ouse, so hopefully you will be fine. 😁 It’s bad here in South York’s though, never seen as many Emergency Services out, blue lights everywhere.
Hope York stays dry for you👍

We have just arrived home from being evacuated, it all happened very quickly after dark when the wardens came round and asked everyone to pack up and leave on the advice of the environment agency. The site entrance road had water flowing over it and we had to go carefully along it. The surrounding roads were bad including the nearby Baslow which had quite a flood near the green across the main road.
just hoping everyone got home safely too0 -
Glad you made it home safely djw147, similarly anyone else who was on site.
We were nearby in Darley Dale last night, the wrong side of the Derwent. We had to make a long detour to get back to the A6 which was deserted.
The whole of the Derwent Valley was on high alert last night (which incidentally reached new record highs in places).

Glad you got home safe, it was horrendous out there last night. Take care.

Interesting.............it’s still possible to book a pitch at Chatsworth for tomorrow. No warning of flooding on webpage. Bit strange, it usually come up if there’s a problem at YRP.🤷♂️🤷♀️

Never used Chatsworth, but YRP several times and it's got me thinking == what happens to the poor old wardens when a sites evacuated ?? I know York's reception is elevated but is the wardens 'lodgings' also at altitude ?? And the same applies elsewhere as well !

Are you suggesting the wardens may have an altitude problem?

Sorry to hear about the evacuation from Chatsworth. Were you offered a transfer to Poolsbrook? Did you have to return home? I was just thinking that it could be a long drive for some people in bad conditions?
0 -
No offer of a transfer as it was a matter of getting off the site quickly with all the other campers. We couldn’t get back to the M1 through Chesterfield as the road (A617) was flooded so we headed through Bakewell and Matlock in the dark hoping not to come across any other floods. Since arriving home we have found out that our route was later closed as that flooded too so we consider ourselves very lucky.

The wardens were probably too busy saving their outfits as well having alerted campers to phone around. When was the warning given?
We stayed on Tewkesbury a few years ago. I normally like a couple of double scotches after 7 or 8 pm at least 3 nights of our 5 night stays. Sometimes might have a third. When at Tewkesbury the weather was wet and so on the nights that I had scotch it was just the one double just in case.
I never realised the likelihood of Chatsworth site flooding

We came back to the site at 4.30pm and asked if the site would be ok as we had driven through a flood in Baslow and the warden said they were in touch with the Chatsworth estate and taking advice from them. They said if Friday was bad there was space for us to stay a extra night other than travelling.
then about 6.15pm they came knocking on the caravans to say we had to move straight away as the environment agency had told them to evacuate. We got the awning down and managed to chuck everything in the car and caravan within 30mins and headed off site. With all the chaos we realised once we were back home that we hadn’t even put the towing mirrors on - oops !There is another exit through to Chatsworth estate for emergencies so we are hoping the wardens managed to get their outfits off that way ?

You have had a very luck escape, Matlock has had terrific flooding. Amazing how quickly you can pack up though if required. The Wardens may well have been allowed up onto House parking area, which is a lot higher than the site. We have never stayed at Chatsworth Site, but know area well, surprised us how close to River it is. Feel for the family of that poor woman in Rowsley, dreadful event.

I feel for you, we had to take a very similar route, to Bakewell down to Matlock then down to Ambergate.
It was the uncertainty that you didn't come to another flood then have to turn back and find another way that was the worst bit.
We stuck to the main roads in the hope that they would be clear, they were for us but were closed later.
It must have been much worse for you having to tow your caravan.
At least you are now safely home.0 -
Presumably the Wardens had a contingency plan in place and a safe place of refuge for their vans when and if flooding happens, as it did. I wonder how much clearing up the wardens now have to do before allowing vans back onto the Chatsworth site. With more rain forecast is the flood warning still in place?
Glad that you, and hopefully all others on site, got home safe and sound, djw. Have you any idea of the number of vans that had to be evacuated?

I would have thought there was an opportunity, for those willing to accept it, to park on some of the estate roads as some of them are much higher than the river and probably safe from flooding, even it it was only a temporary measure so people could travel home in daylight?

We left York this morning and noticed the river had risen around 18 inches overnight but still within the banks. There were lots of heavy showers as we headed north though.

Replying to nellythehookers question - the site was quite full, the warden said they had 8 spaces left for Friday night. Chatsworth is a busy site and the estate is get ready for it’s Christmas market which starts next Friday so I would think the site would be busy for that. We are lucky to be home safe and dry unlike many local people - so awful

There appears to be no official word from the CMHC, unless ive missed it so why hasnt a statement been made to say the site is closed?
0 -
Perhaps it's not. Showing 92 on availability for Saturday (most of them) and 67 Sunday. With river levels falling on the upper part of the Derwent perhaps it was only closed Friday. I have not heard anywhere that the site itself was flooded, so there might not be any damage. Probably best to enquire if you were thinking of trying to book though.

I’ve just taken this from the Environment flood alert pages, I’m not sure where Chatsworth is exactly but I believe it’s not currently at risk👍🏻

Just looked at the agency flood warning for Baslow page.
It first showed Chatsworth site as being flooded but when I zoomed in then out it now shows as clear.
If in doubt, call the site.

It’s showing as Amber now, rather than Red. Rivers are going down. With a bit of luck, the site might have escaped actually being underwater.
We are a bit further North, and it’s an icy but beautiful morning here. Fog lying in the valleys, still lots of places under water, and some roads impassable. But I got into Sheffield ok this morning down Parkway. Thick fog though, just to add to the fun.
