Well, we've all heard of Scotland's North Coast 500 but how about Ireland's equivalent?

As a family my parents took us children to Ireland and we did the Ring of Beara and I've always wanted to return, now this looks interesting. Anyone have experience or knowledge of the WAW! Advice or sites to stay at would be welcomed?

The guidebook to the Wild Atlantic Way written by David Flanagan and Richard Creagh can be recommended. On sale for £12.59 including postage from a well known supplier.

It's about three times the length of the north coast of Scotland, a fair old drive. My favourite place (of those I've already seen) is Connemara, lots of camp sites. Go and buy yourself a Bodhran at Roundstone. wink

Of course, there is no need to attempt all of it.

Over 15 years ago we travelled part of the West  Coast of Ireland from the south, long before WAW was known by that name.

Last May we travelled from Limerick north and round the top, most of it on WAW which is clearly signposted but we didn't slavishly follow every sideroad.

As regards campsites, prior to our trip, I contacted the Irish Tourist Board by e-mail, asking for information on campsites and received a free excellent, comprehensive booklet. Using that we had no problem finding sites.  The booklet had information about Camping Key Europe card which offers discounts, usually of 1 euro per night, at some sites. The card is available from CAMC for £5.

If you wish to visit The Aran Islands and/or The Cliffs of Mohar, I would recommend Nagles  Camping and Caravan Park which is close to the pier at Doolin. ( Two Irish folk  separately recommended that rather than the alternative site in Doolin, based on their experiences.)

Unfortunately, sea conditions were not appropriate for visiting the islands but we had a superb coastal walk to and from the Cliffs of Mohar.

I don't know how detailed the guide to the WAW is but check your route each day. Example is just south of Tralee it takes you over the Conner Pass, you don't want to try that in a motorhome or with a caravan.

It is always appreciated when the person asking the question gives feedback about the usefulness of the replies.
